Lower North Shore Old Fort Bay
Old Fort Bay is one of three communities in the municipality of Bonne-Esperance, on the Lower North Shore, Quebec. Old Fort Bay currently has a population 347. Old Fort Bay is the site of an ancient fort, hence the name "Old Fort". The main shop in the community is "Nel's", but it has two other stores; "Gary's" and "Dwight's". The school in Old Fort Bay is Mountain Ridge School, now an elementary, it used to go until secondary 1, it now only goes up to cycle 3 year 2. The high school is located in St. Pauls River, the next town east on 138 from Old Fort bay. The school in St Paul's River serves all secondary levels of education in Bonne-Esperance, Old Fort's school is the elementary school for Bonne-Esperance. Attractions in the community include dog island, an island off shore from Old Fort the has a rock that looks like a sleeping dog, granny's hill which is said to have a fishing boat buried in it and that you can hear the clock ticking, and the community center, which houses an outdoor rink in the winter. You can travel to Old Fort by ferry from St. Barbe, NF to Blanc Sablon, QC, and then heading west on 138 until you see the sign "Welcome to Old Fort bay". You cannot travel by road from southern Quebec such as Montreal.
