VIRGATE

The 'virgate' was a unit of land area measure in Medieval England. It was equivalent to 1⁄4 of a hide or 1⁄4 of a carucate. A virgater would then be considered a peasant worker who owns thirty or more virgates of land. Similarly, a half virgater would be a worker who owns fifteen virgates or less.
