VISION (YORK)


'''Vision''' (also known as '''yorkVision''' and formerly '''York Student Vision''') is one of two student newspapers at the University of York. It is distinguished from its campus rival, ''nouse'', by its tabloid design and anarchic sense of humour. It currently holds the title of Best Student Budget Publication 2006, awarded jointly by the Press Association and the NUS.

Vision is currently edited by two non-sabbatical students, Adam Thorn and Lucy Taylor, and consists of a newspaper with a large arts section called, "the scene".

Former Visionite Ryan Sabey has gone on to become one of the country's most successful tabloid journalists.
His biggest scoops include:

It has won numerous national awards in both the Guardian Student Media Awards, and NUS Student Media Awards.
In 2004, it was named ''The Guardian'' Student Newspaper of the Year for a record third consecutive year - the only time this has occurred in the 26-year history of the ceremony.
It has also received an enviable clutch of awards for its writing, design, and in the small budget category. (The paper has no full-time sabbatical officers, being completely run by current students. It is given less funding than its rivals at larger universities).
In particular, the publication has received critical acclaim from a number of top journalists, including former Mirror editor Piers Morgan, former BBC director General Greg Dyke, Channel Four News Anchor Jon Snow and Loaded founder James Brown.
Online, yorkvision.co.uk won Website of the Year in the 2002 Guardian Student Media Awards.
In 2006, it was named NUS Small-Budget Publication of the Year

★ Ryan Sabey - Now working at the News of the World. Was named Young Journalist of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards.

★ Rob Harris - Won Guardian Reporter of the year, Newspaper of the year (for his role as editor) and overall Journalist of the year. Harris' most famous piece was entitiled Lecturer: My Child Porn Shame

★ Jon Bentham - Won Guardian Newspaper of the year, Overall Journalist of the Year, plus NUS Feature Writer of the Year

★ Gareth Walker - Won Guardian Columnist of the Year

★ Jonathan Bray - Won Guardian Columnist of the Year

★ Simon Osborn - Won Sports Journalist of the Year
Former Vision editors and writers have gone on to work for a wide range of media outlets, including Reuters News Agency, various departments in the BBC, and work as freelance contributors to various newspapers, including The Guardian and The Telegraph. Many are now in staff positions in both the national and local press.
