Recent history

Although Vitória de Guimarães have never won the Portuguese Football Championship or the Portuguese Football Cup, it is one of the most respected clubs in Portugal, playing in the top division for the last few decades, usually challenging for a UEFA Cup place. However, in 2005/2006 season, the team was relegated to Segunda Liga after its worst championship performance in decades.
Clubs such as Parma AC, Atlético Madrid and Sparta Prague have been eliminated from European competitions by Guimarães.
In the early 2000s, Vitória struggled to keep itself in the top Portuguese division (Superliga). Those years were marked by the decline of the leadership of Pimenta Machado, former president of the club. Pimenta Machado was accused on charges of embezzlement.
Despite this, Vitoria Guimaraes had an impressive season. Progress continued in 2004-05 and they secured an impressive league place finish and qualified for European competition (the UEFA Cup). Vitoria's recent renaissance fell apart in 2005-06, and they finished 17th in the Superliga despite reaching the cup semi-final, having beaten SL Benfica in the quarter-final where Marek Saganowski scored a magnificent goal with his hand. They also failed to progress from their UEFA cup group, as eventual winners Sevilla and Bolton Wanderers progressed.

New stadium

'Estádio D. Afonso Henriques' is a football (soccer) stadium in Guimarães, Portugal. It was expanded and refurbished for the Euro 2004 competition, and it seats 29,865 people. It is the home of Vitória SC football club.
In 2004, a new leadership era began with Vítor Magalhães (former President of Moreirense, another team from Guimarães municipality) and the team finished the championship in 5th place. In 2006 the team was relegated. Vitória Sport Clube plays at D. Afonso Henriques Stadium, one of the host stadiums of Euro 2004.
Vitoria SC also nearly knocked out Bolton Wanderers with a goal by Marek Saganowski but Portuguese U-21 star Ricardo Vaz Te equalized with a stunning strike for Bolton in the dying minutes. It should also be noted that Bolton finished 5th place in the Premiership while Vitoria SC was relegated to the Liga de Honra.
After the "Big Three", Benfica, F.C. Porto and Sporting, Vitoria is the club which attracts most supporters to its stadium, with average attendances of 15 000 to 20 000 per game, even when in the 2nd Division.

Minho Rivalry

Aside from the loyalty of the supporters, which earned the White Angels the title "Best fans of the country", there is also a hooligan side, which often give the club a bad name. During a Portuguese Liga match between Minho province rivals SC Braga the score was 0-0 and after fans have gotten frustrated at this was a game in contention for a UEFA spot fans. The White Angels started a riot in the pitch some even climbed over fences to invade the pitch but most of the violence happened in the city center of Braga fans were severaly beaten by Police and some even arrested.
The city of Guimaraes is often referred to as the "birthplace of the Portuguese nationality" and was the birthplace of Afonso I of Portugal, the first Portuguese king this only adds fuel to the ever growing derby of Minho Province.
This derby is considered one of Portugal's most intense derbies with both clubs competing for a top three finish enabling them to play in the UEFA Champion's League with both clubs coming close but both have failed to qualify for Europe's most prestigious competition despite both clubs preforming very well in the UEFA Cup.
Both clubs have even tested each other in Europe where in the 90's Vitora were one of Portugal's best in Europe beating sides like Parma AC, Atlético Madrid and Sparta Prague have been eliminated from European competitions by Guimarães.
The derby also intensified during 'UEFA EURO 2004' hosted by Portugal where both clubs were involved in new stadium reconstruction with most funds coming only from Supporters both clubs looked for UEFA Champion's League football but despite reaching the 2005-2006 Portuguese Cup where they beat SL Benfica but got relegated while SC Braga finished 4th.
In the 2007 Season Guimarães were promoted where many fans expect a better result in the League table and revenge against SC Braga.

Vitoria derby

Vitória SC have a huge rivalry with Vitoria FC OF Setubal but nothing compares to the Deby do Minho of the Minho region of Northern Portugal against SC Braga once the two biggest cities of Galacia.

Fans

Vitória de Guimarães possibly have the most different fans in Portugal. The biggest supporters group ''claque'' are the White Angels, their motto is ''"Somos únicos"'' (We are unique).
The Vitoria fans are also known to be one of the few supporters group that has no preference for any of the "big three" , being one of the most important cities after Porto and Lisbon, Guimares does not have houses of the big clubs. The attempts of opening houses in there lead to the houses being completely trashed. This shows the excessive pride of the Guimaraes for their home and it's independence.
Over the last years, the White Angels along with the other club's supporters Insane Guys left a trade mark image of ripping out the seats throwing them into the field, often hitting players and referees and injuring them when they feel that the game is being judged against them. These situations happened home and away as well as against "big three".
They were named by most of the supporters group leaders as the most violent supporters in Portugal.
A self confessed White Angel is Fernando Meira who played at the club and now plays in Germany where his club won the League he was seen with a Scarf of Vitoria de Guimaraes with it Stating (Sumos Unicos) We are Unique.
