'Voisey's Bay' is a Canadian bay in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
It is located on the northern coast of Labrador, approximately 38 kilometres south-west of the community of Nain. The bay is heavily indented with numerous inlets and islands and is extremely rocky.
A large nickel deposit was discovered in hills along the western shore of the bay in September 1993 by Archean Inc., a prospecting firm hired by Diamond Fields Resources Inc.. This deposit is considered to be one of the most substantial mineral discoveries in Canada in the last 40 years and is stimated to contain 141 million tonnes @ 1.6% nickel. Currently the mining rights for the Voisey's Bay nickel deposit belong to CVRD Inco, a Canadian mining and metals company, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario. On January 4, 2007 Inco Ltd. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of CVRD, the largest mining and metals company in the Western Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. Inco Ltd. has since changed its name to CVRD Inco to reflect its new ownership.
Since the discovery of the Voisey's Bay deposit, efforts have been stepped up to find similar deposits in coastal Labrador.
