The origin of this song has been more or less unknown since it was released on Old Crow Medicine Show's album, ''O.C.M.S.''. The chorus was written by Bob Dylan during the recording of the soundtrack for the film ''Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid'' and was never released except on a rare Dylan outtakes bootleg. Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show finished the music and wrote the verses. The official publishing information is Dylan/Secor. The band performed an early version of the song at the Station Inn in Nashville in 2001, as part of a series of songs in the show to commemorate Dylan's 60th birthday.
The song has also been covered by Against Me!, Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers and Little Feat, among others.
