The trail starts in Gardiner, New York in the south and runs through New Paltz, New York to Rosendale, New York in the north. It offically ends at the town line in Rosendale, but the former rail line continues on to a large abandoned train trestle in Rosendale where it abrubtly ends half way across the trestle. Extending the rail trail on to Kingston, NY along the former rail route seems unlikely due to land ownership issues. On the southern end, the trail continues along an active rail line for approximately five miles.
Beautiful views of the Shawangunk Ridge to the west are possible from openings alongs the rail trail. The trail cuts directly through New Paltz, which affords trail users a chance to take a break and buy supplies.
