WANDERLUST

'Wanderlust' (Middle High German: ''wandern'', to wander, and ''Lust'', desire) is a German loanword. It is commonly defined as a strong desire to travel, or by having an itch to get out and see the world.[1] Some consider it to be a simple linguistic compound of ''wander'' and ''lust''.

Usage

The word was first recorded into English dictionaries by 1902.[2] In German, the term ''Wanderlust'' sounds old-fashioned today. To retranslate the English ''Wanderlust'' in the sense of "love of travel", the expression ''Fernweh'' (composing of 'Fern'= 'far' and 'weh'= 'ache') is more appropriate.

''Wanderlust'' is used in the series of books ''Dragonlance'' to describe a genetic process that a race called "Kender" (Which are akin to wood elves or hobbits) go through, during which they are overpowered by an insatiable urge to leave behind any permanent location for residence and simply explore.

David Sylvian wrote and performed a piece of music entitled "Wanderlust" on his 1999 album "Dead Bees On A Cake".
Duke Ellington wrote a well-known blues called ''Wanderlust''. The successful modern Australian jazz group, Wanderlust, is named after Ellington's tune.
The song "Wanderlust" appears on the album Wishmaster released July 28th, 2000, by the Finnish Symphonic metal band Nightwish. Considering that the song Wishmaster contains evidence of being a tribute to Dragonlance, it's also possible the name of this song, along with "The Kinslayer" (Kinslayer Wars) was influenced by the same source.
