The 'Washington Agreement' was a peace agreement mediated between the warring
Bosnian Croats (represented by
Croatia) and the
Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, signed in
Washington and
Vienna in
March 1994. Under the agreement, the combined territory held by the
Croat and Bosnian government forces (dominated by
Bosniaks) was divided into ten autonomous cantons, named
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The cantonal system was selected to prevent dominance by one ethnic group over another.
