'Webster University' is an American private university in Webster Groves, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri.
The university
It was founded in 1915 by the Sisters of Loretto as Loretto College, and it was one of the first Catholic women's colleges located west of the Mississippi River. The first male students were admitted in 1962. The Sisters of Loretto transferred the university to a Board of Directors in 1967.
Webster has many campuses nationwide, located on military bases and in many metropolitan areas. There are also international campuses in Geneva (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria), Leiden (the Netherlands), London (United Kingdom), Shanghai (China), and Cha-am (Thailand). In January 2006, Webster University president Richard Meyers announced the opening of a new campus in the revitalized downtown St. Louis area as their longest property lease in the history of the University.[1]
Webster University is made up of five Colleges and Schools, and has about 5,000 enrolled students at the main campus in Webster Groves and 15,000 worldwide. The University has more than 100,000 alumni.
The university is a center for the arts and arts education in the St. Louis region. Webster's Loretto-Hilton Theater is home to The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. It also hosts the Webster Film Series. Opera performances are accompanied by the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.
Colleges and schools
The College of Arts and Sciences
The College of Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in approximately three dozen specialties. Several departments make up the College of Arts and Sciences, including: The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences, The Department of Biological Sciences, The Department of English, The Department of History, Politics, and International Relations, The Department of International Language and Culture, The Department of Nursing, The Department of Philosophy, The Department of Religious Studies, and The Center for Interdisciplinary Programs.
The College of Arts and Sciences offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs.
Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts
The College of Fine Arts offers numerous graduate and undergraduate degrees in approximately two dozen areas of study. The College is made up of four main departments: the Departments of Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre Arts. The College also operates the Community Music School, which is used as a training center for young musicians from all over the region. The Community Music School of Webster University is part of The National Guild of Community Music Schools, which includes about 250 schools in cities across the country. In addition, The Community Music School is one of only eighteen non-degree granting community music schools in the United States to have earned accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis are housed on campus and perform their seasons in the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts. Students also have the opportunity to see and play alongside the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, which plays on the campus and offers educational programs with Webster University. Members of the St. Louis Symphony are also members of the Webster faculty.
School of Business and Technology
Webster University's graduate degree programs include the Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Doctor of Management. The School of Business consists of three major departments: The Department of Business, The Department of Management, and the Department of Math and Computer Science. M.A. programs are available in fifteen high-growth career fields, ranging from finance and marketing to human resources management and telecommunications management. The School of Business and Technology offers degrees in over two dozen specific areas of study.
School of Communications
Sixteen distinct majors with different areas of emphasis are available at undergraduate level, while the graduate program offers master's degrees in five fields of communications. The Communications program at Webster is in the process of being improved after budget cuts in recent years forced some programs to be scaled down. The improvements will include a revival of the student-run television station.
School of Education
The School of Education offers undergraduate degrees in five different specialties, including: Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Middle School Education, Special Education, and Early Childhood Education. The Master of Arts in Teaching is also available, as well as post-baccalaureate certification.
