Production

The film was written by Steve Faber and Bob Fisher and was produced through New Line Cinema, with filming taking place on location in Washington, D.C. and Maryland's Eastern Shore. It was released in the United States on July 15, 2005 and became an immediate hit, grossing $33 million in its first weekend. It was also fairly well received by critics, who admired the natural chemistry between Wilson and Vaughn, comparing them in some instances to Paul Newman and Robert Redford in ''Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'' (the comparisons might have been inspired by the very similar carefree bike-riding scenes found in both movies). The film also had extremely long legs, grossing over $209 million. This is quite a feat, considering most movies that made around $33 million in their opening weekend only managed about $100 million in 2005. The astounding level of success was not expected by the studio considering its modest budget ($40 million) and competition with heavily advertised blockbusters during the summer season. The film has also been credited along with ''The 40 Year-Old Virgin'' to have popularized adult-aimed R-rated comedies again.
On April 24, 2006 this hit comedy topped the nominations for the year's MTV Movie Awards with five including Best Movie. It won Best Movie, On-Screen Team (Vaughn and Wilson), and Breakthrough Performance (Isla Fisher).

Plot

Wilson and Vaughn play best friends working as colleagues in divorce mediation. The friends frequently "crash" (attend as uninvited guests) wedding parties to meet women. Vaughn's character, Jeremy, was taught the rules and methods of wedding crashing by the creator of the practice, Chazz (Will Ferrell). Their freewheeling fun ends when Wilson's character, John, falls in love with a bridesmaid named Claire (Rachel McAdams), the daughter of the U.S. Treasury Secretary (Christopher Walken).
Jeremy has sex with Gloria, the youngest daughter of Secretary Cleary, on the beach. When Gloria claims to have been a virgin, Jeremy flips out and pleads with John to leave the party as soon as possible. Gloria, on the other hand, asks her father to invite John and Jeremy to join her family in returning to their home after the wedding, and throws a stereotypical child-like temper tantrum until the Secretary gives in. Meanwhile, John finds that Claire has a boyfriend, yet still continues to pursue her, contrary to the beliefs of wedding crashing. Once they reach the Cleary home, a game of "touch" football is brought on. Jeremy repeatedly gets pummeled by Claire's macho boyfriend, Zach, despite the fact that tackling isn't necessary. John, meanwhile, ignores Jeremy and tries to get closer to Claire.
During dinner, Jeremy and John are asked questions about themselves. However, Jeremy has a hard time answering because Gloria reaches out her hand under the table to give him a handjob. Later on, John adds a laxative (via a tear dropper) into Zach's drink, forcing him to run to the bathroom. When John prepares to join Claire outside, Secretary Cleary's wife corners him in the bedroom and forces him to feel her breast implants. When John comments that they are good quality, Mrs. Cleary turns mean and calls him a pervert before storming off. Todd, the angry, homosexual son of Mr. Cleary, warns John that the last guy who got caught with Cleary's wife was sent packing to a remote shack in Guam.
Meanwhile, Jeremy wakes up to find himself tied up to his bedpost. A naked Gloria mounts him, gags his mouth and basically rapes him. Later that same night, with Gloria out of the room but Jeremy still tied up, Todd enters Jeremy's room. He claims the two of them had a moment during dinner. The naked Todd snuggles under the covers with the tied up Jeremy and tries to force himself on him. But both hear Mr. Cleary coming into the room, and Jeremy manages to get Todd to hide in a closet. Jeremy tells nothing to
Mr. Cleary, who doesn't even notice Jeremy is tied up. When Mr. Cleary leaves, Jeremy convinces Todd to leave too by promising him they'll have a talk the following day.
After enduring a grueling night of nearly being molested twice in a row, Jeremy is ready to leave immediately. John convinces Jeremy to stick around, if only to give John a chance to make it with Claire. Following a quail hunting expedition that morning (in which Jeremy is shot in the buttocks by Zach, although John was the intended target), Claire and John go on a bike ride and kiss at the beach. Claire realizes at this moment that she doesn't love Zach. Upon their return, however, Zach announces his engagement to Claire, apparently in response to John's advances. Zach calls in to one of his preppy buddies and asks him to dig up dirt on John and Jeremy; Later that afternoon, Zach exposes the truth to the family, and John and Jeremy are forced to leave.
Once they reach home, John constructs a plan to see Claire again at her and Zach's engagement party, but he is nicked at the entrance and ends up getting beaten by Zach, who threatens to kill John if he gets near Claire again. Jeremy, who was supposed to accompany John, never shows up. An angry John heads to Jeremy's place and catches him having sex with Gloria. John becomes enraged and ends their friendship. John begins to crash weddings alone, and frequently embarrasses himself by doing stupid things out of bitterness, like kissing the bride, collapsing onto the drum set of the wedding band, and telling children that there is no such thing as true love. John begins to put thought into suicide and after many attempts, finally ends up being confronted by Jeremy. Jeremy announces that he will be marrying Gloria and urges John to attend. John rejects the offer, and instead goes to find Chazz, the creator of wedding crashing. Chazz, who has now turned his attention to crashing funerals instead of weddings, takes John along with him to a funeral. At the funeral, John sees both the fake, attention-demanding crying of Chazz along with the genuine crying of the poor widow. It is then that John sees the error of his ways, and decides to attend Jeremy's wedding.
He shows up late to the wedding, but is confronted by the Secret Service, but Jeremy still insists that he act as best man. He conveniently ends up standing across the aisle from Claire. He finally gains the opportunity to explain himself to her, who accepts his apology and breaks her engagement with Zach. The two become a couple again and the wedding continues as planned. The final scene finds both couples on the way to crashing another wedding, together. The film is also another entry in the frat pack series of movies that feature some combination of 'Will Ferrell', Ben Stiller, 'Vince Vaughn', Luke Wilson, 'Owen Wilson', Steve Carell, and Jack Black.

Cast and characters

Owen Wilson as John Beckwith - One half of the inseparable wedding crasher duo. John is a bachelor attorney riding high on his success with Jeremy, but unlike his friend, seems to be developing a conscience after taking advantage of so many women.

Vince Vaughn as Jeremy Grey - The other half of the wedding crasher duo, and an unrepentant womanizer. He remains a loyal friend to John, even sticking it out over one tumultuous weekend at the Clearys'.

Christopher Walken as Treasury Secretary William Cleary - A big sailing fan and oblivious head of the dysfunctional Cleary household. He is generally affable man, but punishes anyone who insults his wife or his daughters. He is considered a frontrunner for the U.S. Presidency.

Rachel McAdams as Claire Cleary - The daughter of the Secretary of the Treasury and the love interest of John. A sweet girl and full time environmental activist. Claire does not easily accept clichés.

Isla Fisher as Gloria Cleary - Claire's mentally unstable, nymphomaniac sister who claims that she lost her virginity to Jeremy (untrue). She is obsessed with Jeremy and forces increasingly kinky sex acts on him, whether he consents or not. He calls her "a stage five clinger".

Jane Seymour as Kathleen 'Kitty Kat' Cleary - The alcoholic sex lionness wife of William and mother of Christina, Claire, Gloria, and Todd. She is known for often seducing young bachelors, as she attempts to do so with John.

Keir O'Donnell as Todd Cleary - The reclusive, hyper-sensitive son of William and Kathleen. He is an extremely angry homosexual artist. He is also convinced Jeremy "had a moment" with him at the dinner table, and tries to seduce him.

Bradley Cooper as Zach "Sack" Lodge - Claire's testosterone-fueled, preppy boyfriend who is obsessed with winning at any cost. Though he cheats regularly on Claire and is only interested in environmentalism so he can sleep with young activists, he is threatened by John and Jeremy.

Henry Gibson as Father O'Neil, the priest officiating at several weddings.

Will Ferrell as Chazz Reinhold - The sage who passed on the wedding crashing rules to his protege Jeremy in 1993. He happily lives with his mother who, according to John, tried to poison Chazz's oatmeal. Chazz has most recently moved on from crashing weddings, and now predominantly crashes funerals.

TV Version

Main articles: The Real Wedding Crashers

The creators of the ''Wedding Crashers'' movie teamed up with ''Punk'd'' star Ashton Kutcher to make a reality-TV version, called ''The Real Wedding Crashers'', which aired in April, 2007 as a mid-season replacement for cancelled show ''The Black Donnellys.'' It was subsequently canceled, as well. [1].

Records

Bradley Cooper was mentioned in the August 2006 issue of GQ as one of "The Top Twelve Movie Dicks". His character from ''Wedding Crashers'' placed Number Two behind William Zabka's character from ''The Karate Kid''.
Will Ferrell's line of: "I almost nunchucked you right there, you don't even realize," is taken almost verbatim from Vince Vaughn's line in the film ''Mr. & Mrs. Smith''. Vaughn's line is "I almost shot you right there, you don't even realize." ''Mr. & Mrs. Smith'' was released approximately one month prior to ''Wedding Crashers''.
