WELLINGTON FIREBIRDS

(Redirected from Wellington cricket team)
The 'Wellington Firebirds' is one of six New Zealand first-class cricket teams that make up New Zealand Cricket.
It is based in Wellington. It competes in the State Championship first class (4 day) competition, the State Shield domestic one day competition and the State Twenty20 Cricket Tournament.
The Firebirds have the best State Championship record of any team since the start of the millennium. They won the title in 2000/01 and 2003/04 and were runners up in 2001/02, 2002/03 and 2005/06.
As of October 2006, the Firebirds' most well-known players include Stephen Fleming, Jeetan Patel, Chris Nevin, James Franklin, Mark Gillespie, Iain O'Brien, Jesse Ryder and current captain Michael Parlane.
An Australian, Anthony Stuart has been appointed as the new coach for season 2006/7.
Most home games are played at the Basin Reserve ground in Wellington, one of only a few first class grounds in New Zealand that doesn't also accommodate rugby.
