WEST SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

'West Sacramento' is a city in Yolo County, California. It is contiguous with Sacramento, but is separated by the Sacramento River and is in a different county. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the county. The population was 31,615 at the 2000 census; the United States Census Bureau estimated the population to be 41,744 as of 2005.^[1]

West Sacramento is located at (38.571105, -121.539170).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 59.2 km² (22.9 mi²). 54.2 km² (20.9 mi²) of it is land and 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²) of it (8.36%) is water.
West Sacramento which lies in Yolo County, is separated from the city of Sacramento and Sacramento County by the Sacramento River. West Sacramento, incorporated in 1987, and consists of 3 communities that were originally distinct towns, Broderick, Bryte, and West Sacramento (originally just the community north of the port canal and south of the railroads), as well as the Southport area.
The Southport community originally consisted of few homes, but now has a considerable population that resulted from a housing boom in the early 1990s. After the housing boom of the early 2000s, however Southport is can now be broken into 5 areas: Linden, Gateway, Arlinton Oaks, Bridgeway, and the Country, with Bridgeway and Gateway being the newest additions to the city.

In March, 2006, IKEA opened a store in West Sacramento near Reed Avenue and Interstate 80 in the Riverpoint Shopping Center. The largest Wal-Mart Supercenter in California opened June 13, 2007, right next to IKEA. A Home Depot is currently under construction next to the newly-opened Wal-Mart. Target opened a new store at the Southport Shopping Center. A Lowe's Home Improvement Center is soon to break ground just west of Target, behind Arlington Oaks.

West Sacramento is also where KOVR-TV/KMAX-TV are housed on KOVR lane.

California Highway Patrol

West Sacramento is the home of the California Highway Patrol Academy and Museum.[1]
Also, there are efforts to move the California Highway Patrol official headquarters from Sacramento (in Sacramento County) to West Sacramento (in Yolo County). [2]

Hotels

A brand new Holiday Inn Express is located on Evergreen Avenue between West Capitol Avenue and US 50. An Extended Stay America Inn is located off the Reed Avenue exit off of Interstate 80. There is also a Best Western and a Motel 6 in town. For many years West Sacramento boasted that it had over 1000 hotel rooms; most of them less than classy.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 31,615 people, 11,404 households, and 7,595 families residing in the city. The population density was 582.9/km² (1,509.5/mi²). There were 12,133 housing units at an average density of 223.7/km² (579.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 64.99% White, 2.57% African American, 1.76% Native American, 7.22% Asian, 0.58% Pacific Islander, 15.99% from other races, and 6.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 29.95% of the population.
There were 11,404 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% were non-families. 27.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.39.
In the city the population was spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,718, and the median income for a family was $36,371. Males had a median income of $31,176 versus $30,183 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,245. About 17.2% of families and 22.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 31.8% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over.
