'West Stockbridge' is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the Pittsfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,416 at the 2000 census.

West Stockbridge was first settled in 1766 and was officially incorporated in 1775.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 48.3 km² (18.6 mi²). 47.9 km² (18.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.86%) is water.
West Stockbridge is bordered on the north by Richmond, on the east by Stockbridge, on the south by Great Barrington, on the southwest by Alford, and on the west by Austerlitz, NY and Canaan, NY.

Demographics


As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,416 people, 601 households, and 406 families residing in the town. The population density was 29.6/km² (76.6/mi²). There were 769 housing units at an average density of 16.1/km² (41.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.09% White, 0.28% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.07% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.85% of the population.
There were 601 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the town the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 31.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $51,000, and the median income for a family was $64,464. Males had a median income of $40,865 versus $32,273 for females. The per capita income for the town was $31,425. About 1.8% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.3% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.
