'Westfield' is a village in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. USA. The population was 3,481 at the 2000 census.
The 'Village of Westfield' lies within the Town of Westfield in the northern part of the county. The village refers to itself as the "Grape juice capital of the world" because the discovery of how to produce unfermented grape juice greatly aided its economy, and Welch's grape products continue to be a major local industry.
Significant institutions in the village include Westfield Memorial Hospital; the McClurg Mansion; Westfield Academy; and the Patterson Library.
The community was founded in 1802 and was formerly known as "Crossroads."
The Village of Westfield was incorporated in 1833. The discovery of a pasteurization method for grape juice made by the Welch family promoted the production of grapes for this purpose in this region.
It is also here in Westfield in 1861 that Abraham Lincoln met with a little girl named Grace Bedell, who had urged him in a letter to grow his beard out fully as an attempt to improve his chances at being elected. Having a chance to stop in Westfield as he travelled through New York by train, he met with a group of townspeople, including eleven-year old Grace Bedell , who had a chance to meet and receive a hug the future President Lincoln. Today there is a small park in Westfield, on the site of the previous "Grand Theatre" movie house, commemorating this event.
Westfield is at the second westernmost exit on Interstate 90 (the New York State Thruway) before
it reaches the Pennsylvania boundary. It is a short distance north of Chautauqua Lake and the
tourist attractions there, most importantly the Chautauqua Institution.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 9.9 km² (3.8 mi²), all land. but Westfield is a short 1 mile drive from the shore of Lake Erie.
The most significant geographical feature in the village is the ravine of Little Chautauqua Creek, which flows roughly north-south, on the way to Lake Erie, just west of the main intersection (that of Portage Street, New York Route 394, and Main Street, US Route 20).
As of the census of 2005, there were 3,464 people, 1,367 households, and 918 families residing in the village. The population density was 352.8/km² (914.1/mi²). There were 1,476 housing units at an average density of 149.6/km² (387.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.6% White, 0.40% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 1.8% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 1,367 households out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the village the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $32,136, and the median income for a family was $43,028. Males had a median income of $30,878 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,828. About 11.1% of families and 17.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.1% of those under age 18 and 19.1% of those age 65 or over.
