Overview

Guitarist/vocalist Andrew Stockdale wrote the lyrics on the song, as well as fronting the guitar riff and chord progression. Written about a fashion model Stockdale had seen on television wearing a "White unicorn shirt with the unicorn spread across her shoulders" (Rolling Stone), it would come to be identified more with Wolfmother's reputation for mythical-elementary songs (a common theme in the recent mid-2000's retro metal movement).
The song refers to homelessness and vagabonds, another theme in the songs included on Wolfmother's eponymous debut album. Stockdale, formerly homeless himself, refers to life on the road with "little less than your guitar for comfort" and a want for love and "a woman" in both "White Unicorn" and "Vagabond".
