Academics

WHS offers a full four year college-prep academic program. Most common classes are offered as well as other specialized courses including TV Broadcasting with a state-of-the-art TV studio and career-prep classes such as culinary arts, cosmetology, construction technology and child development. The academic year runs from August through June and is split into two semesters. Most students’ schedules are comprised of eight classes. They attend four 90-minute blocks per day on alternating days.
Major academic departments are: Communications Studies, Technology, Physical Education, Culinary Arts, ROTC, Health, Science, Foreign Language, Social Science, Language Arts, Mathematics and Visual and Performing Arts. Honors and AP courses are offered in Art, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Foreign Language, Geography, Government, History, Language Arts, Microeconomics and Physics.
All Rocklin high schools use a system of Essential Skills & Concepts. Students are not allowed to pass a class unless all of the Essential Skills for that class are demonstrated as mastered. For some classes, like English, Essential Skills may be demonstrated by receiving a passing grade on assigned essays or tests. In classes like mathematics Essential Skills must be demonstrated by receiving a passing grade in specific skills on cumulative tests. WHS policy does not allow "F" or “D” grades. Any grade below a grade of "C" is considered a No Mark (NM) or a No Credit (NC). The class must be repeated to get a passing grade. This grading system, especially the concept of essential skills, has been the subject of controversy.
