'William Carey University' is a university in southern Mississippi, in the United States affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Mississippi Baptist Convention. The main campus is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; there are two subsidiary campuses in Gulfport, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana. It was founded 1906 as the 'Mississippi Woman's College', but changed its name to William Carey College in 1954 when the college became coeducational.
The university is named for the Englishman whom some consider to be the founder of modern protestant evangelical missions, William Carey D.D. (1761-1834.)
William Carey University celebrated its Centennial on August 14, 2006. This day also marked the transition of William Carey ''College'' to William Carey ''University''.
The college offers baccalaureate degrees in the areas of arts, humanities, and sciences; education and psychology; business; religion; music; and nursing. The M.B.A, M.Ed., M.S. in psychology, and M.S.N. degrees and a specialist degree in elementary education are also offered. Three trimesters of eleven weeks each comprise the academic year. Two summer sessions are also offered.
William Carey University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor and Masters degrees. 'The Winters School of Music' is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The music therapy program is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association.
'The Fail School of Nursing' is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, by the board of trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning of the State of Mississippi, and approved in New Orleans by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
Notable members of the faculty of William Carey University include Bennie Crockett, PhD, ThD, Myron Noonkester, PhD, and Milton Wheeler, PhD.
The president of William Carey University, Dr. Larry Kennedy, recently succumbed after a long struggle against Lou Gehrig's Disease. On April 30, 2007 former Executive Vice President Tommy King was inaugurated as the University's 9th president.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs is Dr. Cloyd Ezell. The Vice President of Church Relations, in addition to serving as Dean of the Cooper School of Biblical Studies, is Dr. Daniel Caldwell. Dr. Bennie Crockett is Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness in addition to serving as Co-Director for the Center for Study of the Life and Work of William Carey. Dr. Frank Baugh is the head of Psychology Graduate Programs. Joe Riley is the Vice President for Business Affairs. Brenda Waldrip is the Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management.
In addition, Dr. Patricia Ward is the Dean of the School of Education, Dr. Cheryl Dale is the Dean of the School of Business, Dr. Mary W. Stewart is the Dean of the Fail School of Nursing, Dr. Myron Noonkester is the Dean of the School of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences as well as Co-Director for the Center for Study of the Life and Work of William Carey, and Dr. Mark Malone serves as Dean of the Winters School of Music.
'Kappa Alpha Lambda' is a men's social fraternity promoting Christian brotherhood and service. Established in 2005, this fraternity sponsors numerous on-campus activities for students. This group also participates in various community service events such as the Relay for Life, Christian Services, Invisible Children, and Habitat for Humanity.
'Sigma Psi Nu', a men's social fraternity, displays an example of Christian brotherhood. This organization has been around since 1999 and is the oldest fraternity on William Carey's campus. With events such as the annual ''Turkey'' ''Bash'' and ''Float the Tubs'', this group has made an impression on the campus and in the surrounding community.
'Gamma Chi', a women's social sorority, is composed of women who work closely with their brother fraternity , ''Sigma Psi Nu'', in order to help improve the lives of their community. They host an annual ''Battle of the Bands'', as well as supporting many other organizations on campus.
