WILLIAMSBURG, KENTUCKY


'Williamsburg' is a city located in Whitley County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,143. It is the county seat of Whitley County. The town was founded in 1818 and named after William Whitley. The Cumberland River flows through the city.

Williamsburg is home to the Kentucky Splash water park (located within the Hal Rogers Family Entertainment Center) and University of the Cumberlands.

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,143 people, 1,928 households, and 1,127 families residing in the city. The population density is 426.1/km² (1,102.5/mi²). There are 2,118 housing units at an average density of 175.5/km² (454.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.46% White, 1.73% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,928 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.9% are married couples living together, 16.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% are non-families. 35.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.87.
In the city the population is spread out with 19.5% under the age of 18, 24.9% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 85.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $18,114, and the median income for a family is $25,996. Males have a median income of $31,905 versus $17,339 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,224. 35.4% of the population and 29.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 49.0% of those under the age of 18 and 15.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
