American football

The Wynne Yellowjackets varsity football program is one that competes at the third-highest classification in Arkansas high school football. Its head coach is Ray Shempert, with assistants Mike Singleton, Lee Moore, and David DeArmon. It competes in class AAAAA (5A), and is in the East conference. Wynne's colors are blue and gold.
The Yellowjackets are widely considered the top program in the 5A classification, and one of the best in the state, with four state championships (most in 5A), twenty-one conference championships, and five state championship game appearances. Wynne is very respected and known across the state of Arkansas for its class, sportsmanship, and for being a tough, gritty program that possesses a smashmouth offense and punishing defense, year after year.
The Yellowjackets hold a storied football tradition.

On January 3, 2007, head coach Don Campbell retired after a thirty-nine year career that included a stellar sixteen-season tenure at Wynne, with an overall record of 257-90-6.[1] His 257 wins rank sixth all time in the state of Arkansas. Campbell also won sixteen conference titles, and two state championships. He was known for being a coach that stuck with a run-heavy Diamond-T (inverted Wishbone formation) that threw a minimal number of passes, and still won, where in recent times, many programs were adopting pass-based offenses.
Distinguished Players

Current Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams played at Wynne, carrying the program to its third state championship in 2001 with a 2,204 yard, 34 touchdown effort, earning him the single-season school record for yards rushing.
Former Yellowjacket Bud Brooks won college football's Outland Trophy in 1954, garnering the award as a member of the heralded "25 Little Pigs", the moniker given to the 1954 Arkansas Razorbacks football team.
Hugh "Bones" Taylor, a former Wynne Yellowjacket, played wide receiver with the Washington Redskins from 1947-54, and was honored as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins in 2002. Taylor later was the head coach of the Houston Oilers in 1965, and was an assistant with the New York Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the San Diego Chargers.
