The 'Xunta de Galicia' is the political bureaucracy for the autonomous community of
Galicia in
Spain. According to the
Galician Statute of Autonomy, it consists of the
president, the vice-president (if necessary), and the specialized ministers (Conselleiros).
History
The Xunta de Galicia has its origin in the Xunta of the
Kingdom of Galicia active between
1528 and
1833.
During the
Peninsular War in
1808, the ''Xunta Suprema de Galicia'' directed the war against the French invaders and maintained the public order. This ''Xunta Suprema'' was in charge of military, legislative, and international relations functions until the establishment of the ''Xunta Central Española''.
In
1843 the ''Xunta Central de Galicia'' was created and presided over by
Xosé Maria Suances
In
1846 the commander SolÃs started a rebellion in
Lugo. He closed the previous Provincial Council and created the ''Xunta Superior do Goberno de Galicia'', presided over by
Pio RodrÃguez Terrazo. His rebellion was put down and the ''
Mártires de Carral'' were killed.
Finally, on
March 16,
1978, the Galician Statute of Autonomy in the 1978 Spanish Constitution allowed for the creation of the current Xunta de Galicia.
