The "'Year of the Gun'" is a reference often made by Canadian media outlets to the anomalous and extreme amount of firearms-related violence experienced in Toronto during the year 2005. Out of 78 total murders in the city of Toronto during 2005, 52 were related to guns (compared to only 27 gun deaths during the previous year of 2004).[1]
