'Zamalek island' () is a district of Cairo, Egypt. It is located on Gezira Island (though in English this is redundant because ''gezira'' means "island" in Arabic), one of two islands in the Nile River that are integral parts of the city (the other being Manyal island).
Zamalek is an affluent residential and commercial district, with many embassies (the Polish embassy for instance)
and ambassador's residences as well as the offices of many multinational firms. The Cairo Tower and a number of hotels are also located on Zamalek island. Foreigners have traditionally clustered in Zamalek's residential quarters. The dormitories of the American University in Cairo (AUC) are located there also. Edward Said, the noted Palestinian scholar, lived in Zamalek for a number of years during his exile. The southern part of the island is known as Gezira. Hotels, the Cairo Opera House and a famous country club are located in Gezira.
