Unforgettable girls getaways to Kauai

Beach in KauaiA girl's getaway is not just about facials, pedicures, relaxing on the beach all day, or partying on the town all night long.

It's also about exploration, figuring out who you are - and getting down and dirty with your adventurous side - like plunging across a zip line 20 feet above the water or crashing face-first into salty ocean waters for the umpteenth time during your first surfing lesson.

A girl's getaway is about going where you haven't gone before - and in Kauai, you can do just that while getting your facials and clocking in precious beach time.

Where to stay: It's not hard to fall in love with the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa (kauai.hyatt.com), distinctly one of my favourite hotels in the world.  Here, the lush and tropical ambiance of Kauai meets discrete luxury and comfort, perfected with true Hawaiian hospitality.

Get around in style: Go hardcore and rent yourselves a Jeep Wrangler (with roll-up windows and soft-top) to cruise around Hawaii's Garden Isle.  Drive-up onto the beach, or explore Kauai's backcountry and taro fields, drive confidently on cliffside roads near Hanalei, or make transporting your surfing gear easier (and way, way cooler).

Get around in a jeepWork out those knots:  Anara Spa (www.anaraspa.com) at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa is absolute bliss.  The traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage has been passed down for generations to help release muscle tension.  The therapists here are guaranteed to help work out the worst of knots.  The tropical lava rock garden showers will blow you away, not to mention treatment rooms that open out onto a small private garden terrace.

Hang out on one of the best beaches in the world on the North Shore at Hanalei Bay.  You'll find beginner, experienced, and pro surfers rubbing elbows in the water and on the beach.  Take a class with Hawaiian Surfing Adventures (www.hawaiiansurfingadventures.com) for a fun way to spend the day or take your time out and relax on one of Dr Beach's favourite beaches.

Get covered in mud: The Hanalei Day Spa at the Hanalei Colony Resort (www.hcr.com/spa) offers an Ayurveda Herbal Mineral Mud Wrap that will leave your skin soft, smoother than ever, and positively glowing.  Spa owner, Darci Palooza, and her team work hard to ensure that the treatments leave your body relaxed and soul refreshed.

Go for the ultimate adventure with Outfitters Kauai's Kipu Falls Zipline Safari (outfitterskauai.com).  The day begins with an easy two-person kayak journey up the Hule'ia River for two miles.  A short hike brings you to a fresh swimming hole (complete with ropes for the ultimate splash) then onto a farm wagon to explore Kipu Ranch.  Another short hike and you'll find yourself at Keko Kai zipline course, where you'll get strapped in for the thrill of a lifetime, as you soar high above the green tree canopies and rivers below.
