March 15 to 23, 2008 marks this year's Pacific Rim Whale Festival.

The festival takes place on Vancouver Island's west coast by which approximately 22,000 Pacific Grey Whales will migrate past this spring. They make the journey from Mexico's Baja Peninsula along the west coast to their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic's Bering and Chukchi Seas.

About the Festival

The Pacific Rim Whale Festival aims to pay homage, give respect and educate the world about the whale - especially concerning its protection in the future. The festival offers an extensive schedule of activities, educational events and lectures, fundraisers as well as culinary events ranging from the Chowder Chowdown competition to a all-desserts night.

The Festivities and Activities!

The festival lasts 9 days and will be a time filled with fun for all, educational events and hands on activities for both children and adults.

Whale watching starts every March on the Pacific Rim shores of Tofino, Ucluelet and The Pacific Rim National Park. A free public viewing station will be available at Amphitrite Point Lighthouse in Ucluelet with the guidance of naturalists, and the Wickaninnish Centre in the Pacific Rim National Park is also a great spot to watch the waves and possible spot some whales. Local charter boats and floatplanes accessible from Ucluelet or Tofino offer a closer look at these great marine mammals.

Kids activities, artist activities and showings, environmental issues, great feasts, guided whale watching trips, a beach cleaning, research updates and First Nations talks are only a small taste of what's in store for the festival.

Whale Watching February 16, 2009 around 4 pm

I am going to be in Victoria the middle of March and would love to go on a whale watch...what are the chances of seeing them at this time of year? Thanks.
