As Indiana Jones's fourth instalment, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is released this week, we at TripAtlas.com decided to "adventure through the world" with Indiana Jones.

Indiana Jones World Destinations: Adventure, Intrigue and Ancient Artifacts!

From the Raiders of the Lost Ark to the Temple of Doom, the Last Crusade and the new Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, discover where Indy's travelled to and where you can find these well known filming destinations and locations.

Don't forget your fedora and whip!

KairouanThe Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

  • The story begins in the jungles of South America but was filmed in the Fern Grotto (Hulei'a Stream) in Kauai, Hawaii. The Fern Grotto is a fern-fringed cave that is only accessible by boat up the Wailua River and oddly enough, is a popular setting for weddings today.
  • Dr. Jones then returns to Marshall College where he is a professor and is filmed at Richmansworth Masonic School in Hertfordshire, UK and at the University of the Pacific in Northern California
  • Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood follow the bad guys to dig for the Ark of the Covenant to Kairouan, Tunisia. It is in Kairouan's streets that they try to fight off the bad guys and Marion is kidnapped. This Tunisian city is the country's "spiritual home" where you'll find more than 50 mosques. With ochre and beige coloured buildings, it is the picturesque desert city.
  • The dig site of the Ark of the Covenant is found in Tozeur and Nafta, Tunisia and Tozeur is where the "opening of the Ark" takes place (that super scary scene at the end!). Nafta (sometimes Nefta) is an oasis and paradise in Tunisia with palms, fruit trees and springs in the brutal and harsh Tunisian desert. Tozeur is where Roman outposts for trade were once located but is today like Nefta, an oasis in the desert. Tozeur is also where some of the world's best date groves are found.

The Temple of Doom (1984)

  • KandyThe movie begins at Club Obi Wan in Shanghai which was filmed at the Royal Horticultural Hall in London, England. With its art-deco design and high ceilings, this hall is normally used for conferences, events, award ceremonies, banquets, fashion shows and more.
  • The car chase scene in Shanghai was filmed at the Inner Harbour in Macau while scenes of the Shanghai Airport was filmed at Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato Marin County in California, USA. Inner Harbour in Macau faces China and is colourful, unchanged and untouched from grand hotels and casinos. With run down buildings, street-side food stands and fish laid out of the sidewalk to dry, don't miss out on the other side of Macau when you visit.
  • The plane crash through the Himalayas was filmed at Mammoth Mountain and Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park in California, USA. These are two popular wilderness and adventure spots in California: from skiing to snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area to hiking, biking and climbing in Yosemite National Park.
  • Indiana Jones, Willie and Short Round find themselves in a small village and on elephants through these small regions India, which was filmed in and near Kandy, Sri Lanka. Kandy is known as the capital of the last king of Sri Lanka, before it came into British possession in the 1800's. It is known as the "hill capital" and the most beautiful town in Sri Lanka, out-visited only by Colombo. It is also here that the Dalada Maligawa temple is located where it is said a sacred relic is located and enshrined: the tooth of Buddha.
  • The infamous Pankot Palace, of eyeball soups and chilled monkey brains as well as the Temple of Kali were filmed at Elstree Studios in London, England

The Last Crusade (1989)

Petra

  • The scene at the beginning that features the young Indiana Jones and his boy scouts group is filmed in Sevenmile Canyon in Moab, Utah
  • The Tempelhof Berlin Airport was in fact also filmed at the Royal Horticultural Hall in London - the same place that the Temple of Doom's Club Obi Wan was filmed five years before
  • The church that Dr. Jones and Dr. Elsa Schneider explore for a knight's tomb (and set fire to, amidst millions of rats) is the Church of San Barnaba de Venezia in Venice, Italy. The church is located in the Campo San Barnaba neighbourhood and became prominent through Katharine Hepburn's movie, Summertime, as well as this Indiana Jones movie, where it was used as a library.
  • Indiana goes to find his kidnapped father (Sean Connery) in Castle Brunwald, where he is being held by Nazis who are looking for his Grail diary. This exterior and interiors of this "Nazi" headquarters castle was filmed in the Rheinland-Pfalz (also known as Rheinland-Palatinate) region in the town of Mayen, Germany. Rheinland-Pfalz is known as one of Germany's most popular wine regions of the world (read more about Wine Regions of the World).
  • The final scenes that feature the location of the Holy Grail were filmed at the famous and iconic Al Khazneh (the Treasury) in Petra, Jordan. It was unknown to the Western world until it was discovered in 1812 and is estimated to have existed at least by the 6th century BC, having been noted in the Dead Sea Scrolls and other ancient writings. According to Arab tradition, it was here that Moses struck a rock with his staff in the desert to make water and where his sister, Miriam, is buried. Since 2007, it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

HawaiiThe Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

  • The newest of Indiana Jones' movies takes place at the height of the Cold War where the bad guys are Soviets - the beginning scene was filmed in the southwest deserts of the USA in New Mexico at abandoned World War II airplane hangers
  • Marshall College this time around was filmed at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut rather than Richmansworth Masonic School in Hertfordshire, UK, as the previous films had been filmed.
  • The Crystal Skull of Akator is located in remote corners of Peru where Indiana Jones and Mutt must find the Crystal Skull before the Soviets find it and use it to rule the world.
  • In the past century, new discoveries, forgotten Incan cities, mysterious tribes, and hidden treasure have characterized Peru to many. From Machu Picchu: the Lost City in the Clouds of the Inca to the possible discovery in 2008 of Paititi: Hidden City of Gold and Treasure - lost treasure, artefacts, and gold are everything that Peru and Indiana Jones have in common.
  • The adventure in Peru begins in Iquitos, the "Gateway of the Amazon" but was filmed in the southeast of Big Island in Hawaii. Producers noted that they looked through the jungles of Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Mexico, and South America, but could not find the jungle they were looking for - so they looked to Hawaii. On Big Island in Hawaii, you'll find the active Kilauea volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as well as Puukohola Heiau, the largest ancient Hawaiian religious temple. You'll also find wonderful beaches, honeymooners galore and wilderness activities as far as the eye can see.
