DestructionThis upcoming Boxing Day, the world will come together and remember the Tsunami that shook the world on December 26th, 2004.

Boxing Day Tsunami or Indian Ocean Earthquake of 2004

The Boxing Day Tsunami (or Asian Tsunami) occurred as a result of the an under water earthquake in the Indian Ocean that sent devastating after-effects in the form of tsunamis that crushed the shores and coasts of the India Ocean, including countries like Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.

The effects of this earthquake were felt all over the world. It rated 9.1 to 9.3 on the Richter scale, and continued to fault (shake) for almost 10 minutes. This was the longest duration of an earthquake that has been recorded. The earthquake also caused the entire planet and its tectonic plates to vibrate about 1 cm and even triggered earthquakes in Alaska. The total energy that was produced by the earthquake, both under and on the Earth's crust and surface, is comparable to Hiroshima -- times 550 million.

The casualties of the Indian Ocean Earthquake neared a quarter of a million people, making the Boxing Day Tsunami the 7th deadliest natural disaster, the 2nd deadliest earthquake, and the most deadly tsunami in modern day history.

Volunteers helping unload suppliesDespite the shock of such a devastating disaster, the world displayed its compassion for those affected by the tsunami. Across the globe, more than $7 billion dollars was raised and donated for emergency supplies, humanitarian aid, and to help in the rebuilding of coastal cities that were most affected.

Whether tsunami, earthquake, or hurricane, the world as a global community has come to realize its sense of responsibility for humanity worldwide, and the need to give compassion and offer hope in pressing times. This Boxing Day, let us solemnly remember the victims of the Asian Tsunami, but let us also remember that there is hope for us yet.
