TORONTO - Where are Canadians and Americans looking to spend their New Year's?  New York City?  Las Vegas?  Ottawa?   Montreal?   TripAtlas.com, a Diamond Group Company, and the World's Largest Online Travel Resource,  looked at the top online search results from major Internet search engines to see where travellers from Canada and the United States are thinking about spending their New Year's.  Here's the top picks and most popular for this New Year's Eve.

Top Canada & U.S. travel picks for New Year's 2008-2009

With the economy in recession, Canadians and Americans alike are cautiously reconsidering whether to get away for a Christmas or New Year's holiday or vacation, no matter how many great travel deals there may be.  In the case of a New Year's getaway, people are looking to destinations and cities outside the typical party destinations - to places where they can have fun, stay close to home and stick to their budget - all at the same time.

Canadians are still travelling strong all over the world!

Although Canada has been feeling some economic strain for a few months, Canadians are still travelling this holiday season.  With a unique, international and multicultural makeup, Canadians will be flying all over the world for vacation and to head home or to their country of origin to visit family for the holidays.

New Year's in Canada.  For those looking to stay in Canada for New Year's celebrations, many are researching how to spend their time in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa or Montreal.  Toronto offers a free outdoor concert at Nathan Phillips Square with fireworks at midnight, as well as New Year's Eve parties at a multitude of clubs.  Vancouver offers fireworks and fun at Stanley Park Pavilion, while Montreal has an unparalleled club scene during New Year's.  And some will go to the nation's capital, Ottawa - maybe even give the politicians an earful as well!

New Year's outside of Canada.   When Canadians think of travelling outside Canada for New Year's this year, they're looking to Las Vegas, Nevada, first and foremost with New York City and Chicago not far behind.  Cheap deals for Las Vegas accommodations and flights and the hot New Year's Eve party scene are bringing Canadians to Vegas - not to mention the glamour of not-so-cheap New Year's Eve parties at high-end clubs with hosts like Paris Hilton or Jay-Z.  Internationally, Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia are also on Canadian travellers' minds, as are New Year's cruises.

New Year's after New Year's?  Another big item that travellers are researching in Canada for New Year's is celebrating other cultures' New Year's happening later during the year.  For example, Chinese New Year is on January 21st this year and many have been looking at spending this festive time in Toronto or Vancouver, home to large Chinese populations.

Americans are staying close to home this New Year's. Our American neighbours are definitely feeling more of the financial crunch and are staying close to home this New Year's.  Amongst a large number searches for "New Years Party" and "New Years Resolutions," every single destination on American travellers' minds are located in the United States.

Move over New York City
Thanks to President-Elect Barack Obama's popularity, many Americans are looking to Chicago to celebrate New Year's Eve this year.  Amongst the top spots to ring in the New Year is Chicago's Navy Pier, perfect for singles, couples and families alike!

Other U.S. Travellers' Picks for New Year's Celebrations.
After Chicago, many Americans are looking to Las Vegas - after all, where else can you drink in public on the street and have your pick of hundreds of thousands of hotel rooms from suspiciously cheap rates to ridiculous penthouse-suite rates?  Next, people are looking to New York City and good 'ol Times Square, Boston, Miami and Washington DC to celebrate the ringing in of 2009.  Like many in Canada, many travellers in the United States were also looking into New Year's cruises.
