Whale watch adventure done on July 31, 2008:
The waters at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy from the ledges off Brier Island right up the Digby Neck are important feeding areas for many species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises), seals and a wide variety of seabirds. Most common species seen are the Minke, humpback and fin whales, harbour porpoise and Atlantic white-sided dolphins. Right whales are frequently seen. Sperm, sei, and blue whales have also been spotted in the Bay of Fundy.
This was my second Whale Watch Tour and this time I decided to book the tour with Zipping Zodiac based in Freeport on Digby Neck. All tours are hosted by an experienced captain, Bob a local lobster fisherman with year-round experience on the waters of the Bay of Fundy.
We cruise in a 20 1/2 foot rigid hull inflatable Zodiac-type water craft, which seats a maximum of 12 passengers. This time we was only 10 persons which was very exited. He decided not to follow the crowd of other boats into the Bay of Fundy, west of Freeport.
He guided our strong Zodiac over the calm waves of the beautiful Bay of Fundy south of Briar Island. After an hour ride we slowed down and watched for the whales. First of all we saw a whale with a calw. And then we all was very excited because one after the other came up and greeted us! It was unbelievable! See the pictures I made from this trip only.
After appr. 1,5 hour of following the various whales one comes up right beside the Zodiac, only 3 feet and we were able to touch him!! He "stand" up and watched us, right as he wants to tell us that we should protect them, that we should do much more, keeping our environment healty and stop damaging the nature. My fingers had a hard time to keep my camera strong to get some good pictures.
We returned quietly in our "floater suit" PFD which kept us warm and dry (this resembles a snow suit, and is something you wear over your regular clothes). But we deep-felt with the whales and had no problems at all, our rapid puls needed the hour back to calm down.

This thrill of excitement was one of the greatest experience I ever had.
