On a recent trip to the Exumas in the Bahamas we went for a swim off the shore of a private island near Staniel Cay. David Hocher, our guide & owner of Staniel Cay Yacht Club, tossed some bread towards the beach and to our surprise a huge pig came trotting out of the bush and joined us for a swim. Talk about a memorable experience.
Apparently several pigs usually come out to visit when a boat comes by but we only saw the one, who the girls quickly named Wilbur.
Luckily Wilbur was very cooperative when it came to getting photos since he'd basically stop moving entirely if food wasn't present.
Exuma (or the Exuma Cays - pronounced "keys" - or just the Exumas) is a chain of about 360 small islands in the Bahamas and has some of the most beautiful beaches & shorelines in the world. Movies like Pirates of the Caribbean and James Bond Thunderball leveraged the beautiful backdrop of the Exumas and celebrities like Johnny Depp, Nicholas Cage, Faith Hill & Tim McGraw, David Copperfield and Eddie Murphy all own their own cays in the Exumas.
We didn't get a chance to go by Johnny Depp's island but we did fly over Faith Hill & Tim McGraw's - which has a huge palace on it - and David Copperfield's.
I'm convinced that the Exumas are the wildlife capital of the Bahamas. Apart from swimming pigs, we encountered wild iguanas that ruled a deserted beach, swam with and fed nurse sharks at Compass Cay and did the same with stingrays at the Chat-N-Chill on Stocking Island.

Peru's undisputed king of tourism is Machu Picchu. Millions of people each year go to Peru to see the ancient temple and ruins. To only visit Peru for Machu Picchu is like going to New York just for the Statue of Liberty. Being the third largest country in South America, there is...
When I told people my plan to camp alone for a week in the desert backcountry of Big Bend National Park, along the Mexico border in Texas, some handled it better than others. Most often it was people who consider swimming in the ocean adventurous that couldn't quite grasp the purpose....
This shot was taken about 20 minutes away from my Toronto house at a place called the Scarborough Bluffs , which is basically still Toronto. Who knew you could find a setting like this here?

I used to think the term "mixology" was something bartenders made up to sound bona fide. Like how weathermen and women refer to themselves as "meteorologists", only instead of predicting the weather they concoct potions to make your food tastier, your date look better and, after too much,...
What a city for photography. The architecture and natural landscape is just so unique and interesting. The only real newer buildings I saw were in the downtown financial district, which is dominated by skyscrapers and office buildings. Step outside of the core though and you're...
Most cities worth their salt have at least 3 iconic neighbourhoods. It's sort of the barometer for what elevates a city past "interesting" and into "unmistakable". New York has Greenwich, Little Italy, Times Square, among many others. Toronto has Church-Wellesley, Yorkville and...

Before, when I would think of the Cayman Islands, I'd think of gilded lamp posts lining marble sidewalks that were occupied by a dichotomous mix of the über rich and the fanny-pack army of cruise patrons on shore leave. I wasn't writing the place off, it just wasn't at the top...

Travel can be expensive. Flights, hotels, car rentals, tours, meals - it all adds up. Quick. Sure, it doesn't have to be expensive, but it can and often is.
For example, you could stay at a hostel instead of a luxury resort. Instead of flying direct you could grab the seat next to the...
