5 Ways to Roam the Heart of England

The Cotswolds, one of England’s most rural areas, is also one of its most posh. A mere 1 1/2-hour drive from London, in the hills of south-central England, is a storybook land home to centuries-old cottages, hyper-manicured hedges and part-time residents like Kate Moss and Elizabeth Hurley. Here are five ideas for having fun in what is known as the Heart of England. From rowdy toe-wrestling competitions to refined tea times, there are plenty of ways to give your trip some character.

1. Kick a Shin
Cotswolds Olimpicks -- Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire
Each June the area hosts the Cotswolds Olimpicks (an event that dates back to 1612), and things get a bit rowdy. Come June 4, Dover’s Hill will be full of competitors and spectators ready for the cannon fire and shin-kicking (a competition that involves, well, kicking your component’s lower legs). After that, catch the fireworks, and follow the torch to Campden for dancing in the square.

2. Hey Good Lookin’

Brompton Cookery School -- Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Kitchen novices and master chefs flock from around the world to attend this renowned cooking school. From half-day courses to weeklong classes, there are tons of ways to bump up your cooking cred. Choose from fish-cooking, dessert prep or an entire meal. And if cooking’s not your cup of tea, just relax, and dine on some of the best food around. www.bromptoncookeryschool.co.uk

3. Regal Residence

Ludlow Castle -- Ludlow, Shropshire
At Ludlow Castle there’s no royal title needed to get in; it’s open to the public for tours, festivals and even a good night’s rest. Choose any of the three renovated apartments in the Castle House, and you’ll be welcomed with fresh breads and wine chilling in the fridge. A dining room with leaded windows overlooks the castle and provides dreamy vistas of the Corvedale Valley and the castle gardens. www.ludlowcastle.com

4. Tea Time

Northern Tea Merchants -- Chesterfield, Derbyshire
This legendary cafe, with tea and coffee trade connections dating back to 1926, serves up more than 50 million cups of tea and coffee each year. They must be doing something right. Here you’ll find a huge selection of teas from around the world and giant bins of freshly roasted coffees, too. Choose from Gunpowder Quing to Ceylon Orange Pekoe, and pair it with a traditional English afternoon snack like cucumber sandwiches, home-made cake or jam-and-cream-covered scones.

5. Praise the Pud

The Pudding Club -- Mickleton, Gloucestershire
Dessert time in England is no joke. If you dine with the Pudding Club, be sure to follow the rules. 1) You may eat only one pudding at a time (there are seven total). 2) You must clean your plate before going up for more. 3) The pudding buffet is by invitation only. If you don’t follow the rules, watch out. The pudding master is always watching. www.threewayshousehotel.com

If you’re like me and can’t afford a fisheye lens right now, a fisheye lens adapter is the next best thing. I tested one out recently that simply screws into the end of my SLR using the filter threads. It’s Photojojo’s Fisheye Lens Adapter . For shutterbugs,...

Travel Gear: Helly Hansen's W Blanche Insulator
The Helly Hansen brand started back in 1877 when Helly Juell Hansen, a Norwegian captain, and his wife began crafting oilskin jackets, trousers, sou'westers and tarpaulins made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil. By 1882, they had sold nearly 10,000 pieces. With that said, chances are, this...

Florida Film Festival Kicks Off
The Florida Film Festival (April 13 - 22) is hands down one of my favorite events in Orlando. Of course, the selection of films is grand (this year there are 167 from 31 different countries), it’s somewhat likely you’ll rub shoulders with a celebrity (past attendees include Paul...

Travel Gear: Keen Hiking Boot, Keen on Comfort
When my friend invited me to hike the NaPali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii, I knew I needed a good, sturdy waterproof shoe. We’d be hiking during rainy season, and fast-drying shoes were key. Sure enough, as we drove from Kapaa to the northwestern coast, it began to drizzle, then fatter...

It's 7 o'clock in Mantaville. Population uncertain. We’re motoring along in a skiff, a small inflatable craft with an outboard motor. It quickly transports us from the Safari Explorer, a luxury mega-yacht that is our home base for the week, to an area off the coast of Kona, Hawaii. On...

Tierra Atacama: a jewel in the Atacama Desert
The Atacama Desert is the driest place on earth; I have the hiking boots filled with red dust to prove it. Nevertheless, it’s also one of the most alluring places around. (Think flamingo-filled salt flats, multicolored lagoons and hot springs galore.) Nature Calls Day 1-3: Fly...

Hiking to Iceland's highest summit
I’d come to a small town in Iceland to test my prowess, to do something I wasn’t sure I could handle. No, it wasn’t eating fermented shark that had me panicky, although that was pretty formidable. And it wasn’t boating with Iceland’s Search and Rescue Team that I...

Safari Explorer: advantages of mega-yacht cruising
There's something to be said about cruising the high seas in a small ship. For one thing, it’s definitely the way to go if you want personalized attention and some extra pampering. I, for one, don’t mind being coddled every now and then. That’s why I recently went cruising...

Rocky Mountaineer: train travel at its best
My train-riding experience — except for a few jaunts around Europe — has mainly consisted of trips around Florida via Amtrak. Those trips, as many train trips are, were for one purpose: to get from point A to point B; they definitely had nothing to do with sightseeing. With that...
