What a city for photography. The architecture and natural landscape is just so unique and interesting. The only real newer buildings I saw were in the downtown financial district, which is dominated by skyscrapers and office buildings. Step outside of the core though and you're greeted by colourfully ornate Victorian-era houses, stacked nearly on top of each other for as far as the eye can see up and down the neverending hills.
Character is the word that comes to mind when trying to describe the city of San Francisco. It has so much depth and breadth in the character department that it's no wonder it was at one time, and still remains, a cultural epicenter and home to Janis Joplin, Allen Ginsberg, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and so many others.
Thinking of going to San Francisco?
- Take a walk to Haight-Ashbury
- Catch a Giants baseball game
- Head down to Pier 33 and visit Alcatraz (the most popular National Park in the US). There's only one official company that runs tours of Alcatraz and general admission is $26/person. Be sure to get your tickets online in advance at www.alcatrazcruises.com as tours sometimes sell out days in advance
- Stop by the Fisherman's Wharf at Pier 39 and see the sea lions basking in the sun then grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants along the boardwalk. For a special treat stop by the Candy Baron and stock up on salt water taffy
- For photographers, there's a ton of great little photography stores around the Fisherman's Wharf area. Lots of great deals can be had - don't be afraid to negotiate a little and definitely shop around. I bought one lens only to find out I could've gotten the same lens for almost $100 less at a shop a few blocks away
- As always when planning a trip, get a quote from a TripAtlas PRO first

Peru's undisputed king of tourism is Machu Picchu. Millions of people each year go to Peru to see the ancient temple and ruins. To only visit Peru for Machu Picchu is like going to New York just for the Statue of Liberty. Being the third largest country in South America, there is...
When I told people my plan to camp alone for a week in the desert backcountry of Big Bend National Park, along the Mexico border in Texas, some handled it better than others. Most often it was people who consider swimming in the ocean adventurous that couldn't quite grasp the purpose....
This shot was taken about 20 minutes away from my Toronto house at a place called the Scarborough Bluffs , which is basically still Toronto. Who knew you could find a setting like this here?
Toronto is known more for its gritty, urban scene than its natural beauty and I hardly believed...
I used to think the term "mixology" was something bartenders made up to sound bona fide. Like how weathermen and women refer to themselves as "meteorologists", only instead of predicting the weather they concoct potions to make your food tastier, your date look better and, after too much,...

Most cities worth their salt have at least 3 iconic neighbourhoods. It's sort of the barometer for what elevates a city past "interesting" and into "unmistakable". New York has Greenwich, Little Italy, Times Square, among many others. Toronto has Church-Wellesley, Yorkville and...
Sandals Emerald Bay, Exuma - Rated the Most Luxurious Destination visited by TripAtlas.com in 2010
The Exumas is a chain of 365 cays and islands that make up roughly half of the islands known as The Bahamas. With a backdrop of vivid aquamarine on a pedestal of soft white sand, it's...
Before, when I would think of the Cayman Islands, I'd think of gilded lamp posts lining marble sidewalks that were occupied by a dichotomous mix of the über rich and the fanny-pack army of cruise patrons on shore leave. I wasn't writing the place off, it just wasn't at the top...

Travel can be expensive. Flights, hotels, car rentals, tours, meals - it all adds up. Quick. Sure, it doesn't have to be expensive, but it can and often is.
For example, you could stay at a hostel instead of a luxury resort. Instead of flying direct you could grab the seat next to the...
