This depends somewhat on the type of bands you're into. My 2 favourites are:
- Lollapalooza in Chicago is usually a safe bet. It's held early August in Chicago. It's held downtown at Grant Park (remember the opening Montage from Married with Children?). They typically have a wide range of acts with something that will appeal to almost anyone. The city itself is a blast.
- Voodoo Experience in New Orleans. I went to this in 2004 and the lineup was incredible. Obviously after Katrina the festival took a back burner but it's picked up the last couple of years. New Orleans has so much history and culture to offer that the lineup can be secondary to what the city has to offer.
Some others to check out:
- Osheaga in Montreal. I haven't been before but I'm going this year. On an island on the St. Lawrence, it's sure to be interesting. Montreal is a blast and the lineup is fantastic this year
- Sasquatch in Washington is supposed to be pretty badass. Some friends of mine went in 2008 and said the venue is second to none for a music festival.
Hope that helps. Cheers.

Thanks Quinn. I actually went to the first Lollapalooza in Toronto, but haven't been since it made Chicago its home base. Also, went to Osheaga a few times since it started a few years back. Both were great!
I'm going to look into both the Voodoo Experience and Sasquatch as well.
Cheers!
