Why should I leave my passport in my hotel safe? What if the hotel room doesn't have a safe?

if there is a safe, definitely use it. another good tip is to photocopy your passport or important passport information and carry that on you if you have it at the hotel, just in case anything does happen, it will be easier to be reissued a new one.

This is why you ALWAYS travel with duct tape. If you are really concerned, tape your passport to the back of a drawer in the dresser or up under the bed frame.

Monco,
You should always try to leave your passport in your room safe or hotel safe. The reason being is you could be pick pocketed or someone could pick up your backpack or purse. If there is no safe I would advise that you carry it in a holder around your neck or waist under your clothing. Remember before you travel to make at least 3 photo copies of your passport one to leave at home and one to carry in your wallet and one for your suit case. This way you can always have it with you without carrying the passport around. If you lose your passport report it to the police and go to the nearest consulate for your country and they will assist you with getting it replaced if there is no consulate for your country try the consulate for the country that you are traveling in. The process will be easier when you have a copy. Hope this helps. Safe and Happy travels...Wendy

I would forget to take it with me when I left the hotel. I'll stick to safes either in the room or at the front desk.

Yes put it in a safe or find a place where you know noone would look.Or you can use a airport locker there.Just don't forget it when you depart from your trip.

I would never leave it anywhere unless I was swimming. Then I leave it for the time I am in a bathing suit in the room safe. The best thing to do is to get a passport holder that can be worn around your neck and to keep it with you at all times. You can get them at Walmart in the luggage section very cheaply. Keep it under your shirt so you always know where it is.

In decades of travel I have left my passport in the room safe precisely once. And remembered that smart move exactly 4 hours after I checked out and was many miles up a bumpy road in rural Mexico.
I just leave mine in my locked suitcase, figuring a chambermaid struggling along with a suitcase (in which she magically knows my passport is located) would look odd. I travel a lot and this works for me.
