The premise behind the whole project is to investigate and foreground sounds we don't or can't usually hear, removing the background noise that often blocks them out. This short piece takes recordings made in the interior of cars during travel, and doppler shifts them to emulate the sound one would hear if traffic passed by and the interior sounds could be heard. There is a little additional ambient noise, but the actual external sound of cars passing by is removed completely. ... traffic cars ...

kind of signature for the element. Slipher noticed that in the spectra of galaxies he studied, the lines for certain elements were shifted toward the red part of the spectrum. This curious phenomenon is called a "red shift." Slipher interpreted the red shift as a Doppler effect, indicating that the galaxies were moving away. This was the first major step toward the idea that the entire universe is expanding. (If the lines in the spectrum had been shifted toward the blue end of the spectrum ...

Lec 23 | 8.01 Physics I: Classical Mechanics, Fall 1999
stars in the sky are binaries, and so when you look at the spectra, you will see them go around each other. And so you, in principle, can measure the red shifts and the blue shifts as they go around each other. You see Doppler effect. If they come to you, you see blue shift. If they go away from you, you see red shift. So, in principle, you can determine for each one of those stars the velocity in orbit, the radius of their orbit and, of course, the period of the binary system. So it's ...

pitch suddenly drops, because now the sound waves are being stretched out. This is called the Doppler effect. Just by measuring the change in pitch, an observer can calculate the speed of the car, and whether it's moving towards him, or moving away. We can do the same with stars and galaxies, using light instead of sound. If a galaxy is moving away, the spectral lines will shift towards the red end of the spectrum. The opposite happens if a galaxy is coming closer. They move towards the ...
