 | Reid Urges Government Agencies to Eliminate Anti-Nevada Travel Policies Nevada Senator Harry Reid today sent a letter to cabinet secretaries and the head of every federal agency, requesting they reject or reverse any travel policy that discriminates against specific US cities - including Las Vegas and Reno. Reid believes that under the current economic downturn, now is the wrong time to discourage travel to any destination in the United States. Reids action comes on the heels of a letter he received from White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, clarifying the Administrations view that decisions on government travel should focus on the cost-benefit of travel rather than the perception of a location.  | Reid Urges Passage of Travel Promotion Act Nevada Senator Harry Reid today discussed the importance of the Travel Promotion Act, particularly to Nevada. Late Monday, Reid expressed frustration that the bipartisan bill was being blocked. This bill would use the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authoritys model for Las Vegas, applying it to the whole country by creating a Corporation for Travel Promotion. That new entity would market the United States around the globe as a tourist destination. Of course, as the number of tourists coming to the United States increases, so will the number of people who visit Nevada. More than 230000 Nevada jobs depend on tourism and because our state has no state income tax, its budget relies heavily on revenues generated from the tourism industry. |
