Passporters Expedition 2009 - Santo Domingo Ciudad Colonial
During Passporters Expedition 2009, we saw a picture of a man (chichi Vera) being electrocuted. A local Dominican was kind enough to give Passporters a history lesson about Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, once dictator of the Dominican Republic and the man responsible for this and many electrocutions. We found this picture on a building in Ciudad Colonial. View the travel blog at Passporters.org.

A benefit we held in Santo Domingo, DR
for the Batey Relief Alliance and La Casa Rosada Orphanage as a part of the Dominican Island Heat I event. Sponsored in part by HBO we were disappointed by the lack of attendance. It is our belief that everyone should try and give back to a poor country during there wonderful vacation. Every little bit help. We were able to raise $1000.00 to help both these causes do their good work. Batey Relief Alliance- Established in 1997 in the United States as a 501c3 tax-exempt humanitarian aid organization , the BATEY RELIEF ALLIANCE—BRA works closely with key international donors/partners committed to positive social change in the developing world. In 2000, BRA created its regional arm, BRA DOMINICANA, a Dominican-based non-governmental organization (NGO) charged to help carry out the mission of the Batey Relief Alliance inside the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Batey Relief Alliance is a member of the Global Health Council and is associated with the Department of Public Information—NGO of the United Nations. www.bateyrelief.org La Casa Rosada They are indeed a legitimate charity, with about 50 kids under their care who have been abondoned and all HIV positive. They have a website or you can go visit them on Ave. Venezuela (thats East of the Ozama in Santo Domingo). They are run by Nuns and supported by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. www.zenbizness.com urbaneconcepts3.blogspot.com The BATEY RELIEF alliances operation in New York is completely virtual, drastically eliminating high overhead costs, and uses very little amount of paper to do its work, making it environmentally friendly.

just a random morning in santo domingo, dominican republic (republica dominica). Streets are riddled with broken down vehicles of all sorts, cars with no mufflers, lanes with no order and cops with no clue. A quick clip i took waiting in line para mi desayuno, comida con moscas.
