![]() | Another jumper learning to travel This is another creature evolved on Rob Cattral's PC. It was originally evolved for the ability to jump and then switched to being evolved for the ability to travel. This creature is only 241 generations "old" in a run of 600 generations. I doubt that it will come up with a way to travel in a consistent direction instead of randomly as it does now, but an earlier run from Rob proved me wrong on that very point. We'll see if it can prove me wrong again. The project web page is: www ... |
![]() | Unfurling Tree 2 - Evolved Virtual Creature This creature is from a population evolved first for jumping height and then travel distance. It's a descendant of the "unfurling tree" from several videos back, and hasn't changed much. Still no consistent direction of travel. Processing time for the evolution was kindly contributed on the PC of Rob Cattral. Want to evolve unique creatures of your own? ![]() | Cement Shoe Worm - Evolved Virtual Creature This creature is from a population evolved first for jumping and then for traversal of a rough terrain. This particular run did so poorly that I decided to record the creature on a flat terrain instead of a rough one so it could at least manage to travel a reasonable distance. Oh well, they don't all do well :P Want to evolve unique creatures of your own? Visit the project web page at: www.stellaralchemy.com ... 3D virtual creature evolution genetic algorithm ... |
![]() | Jumper Done Learning to Travel I posted a distant ancestor of this creature in an earlier video here: www.youtube.com I had predicted that the creature would probably be unable to evolve a means of traveling in a consistent direction. Well, I've been shown wrong :) This creature is the final best creature from the end of the run and it has clearly found a way to move in a consistent direction. Not 100% consistent, but much better than its distant ancestor in the earlier video. This creature was evolved on Rob Cattral's PC ... |
![]() | Sideways - Evolved Virtual Creature This creature is from a population evolved in 3DVCE. To me, it looks as though it were built to travel in a different direction, hence the name. This creature was kindly contributed by Chris Hebbern. Want to evolve unique creatures of your own? ![]() | Grey Coiler - Evolved Virtual Creature creature is from a population evolved for the ability to traverse the rough terrain shown in the video. As interesting as the creature looks and moves, it doesn't really do very well. It jumps here and there, but too erratically to give rise to a consistent direction of travel. Processor cycles for this evolution were kindly donated by Rob Cattral. Want to evolve unique creatures of your own? ![]() | Red Pentagon - Evolved Virtual Creature terrain shown in the second half of the video. The population was initially evolved for jumping ability and then switched to the horizontal travel task. This has resulted once again in a now all-too-familiar movement strategy that involves no clear sense of direction. Processing time for the evolution was kindly donated on the PC of Rob Cattral. ![]() | Wander-Shrub - Evolved Virtual Creature This creature is from a population evolved for the ability to traverse the terrain shown in the video. The strategy adopted has a more or less consistent direction of travel, although it sometimes gets turned around. Processor cycles for this evolution were kindly donated by Rob Cattral. ![]() | Jumper Learning to Travel This creature is at generation 196 of an experiment that evolves jumpers for 150 generations and then switches to a traveling task for a few hundred more generations. The way this guy jumps has left him with no consistent direction of travel. This means that now and then he'll travel far, and now and then not. He'll have many offspring, and by chance enough of them will travel far and continue to propagate his genes down the generations. He still has a few hundred more generations to go, but ... |
![]() | Flops with Three Limbs - Evolved Virtual Creature This creature is from a population evolved in 3DVCE. It seems to lack any consistent direction, but unlike many of the directionally-challenged creatures produced so far in 3DVCE, this one manages to travel in a consistent direction for at least a short time before diverting. Processing time for the evolution was kindly donated on the PC of Mait Uus. Want to evolve unique creatures of your own?
