southern roads to australia's centre
Trip Details
| Destination: | Australia |
| Itinerary/Activities | Northern South Australia, the 1,000,000 square mile backyard |
| Useful tips | Take a sat phone, a swag, a registered EPIRB, two spare tyres, a spare jack, plenty of water, and don't even try to travel at less than 80kph on the corrugations. Even if they're like the Himalayas, and covered in sand to boot. Oh and stop for camels and donkeys and eagles facing into the wind. No mobile phone or automobile rescue services out here. You get yourself into it, you get yourself out of it! The rest of whatever you need to know will be on a 4 wheel drive website. Don't leave home in anything less if you're skittering off the Stuart Highway, or the Birdsville or Oodnadatta tracks, or taking the Kingoonya "road" to Ceduna, or whipping down the Kukatha track to Mt Ive. Looking for dead bodies in hot deserts wastes the time of the volunteers who'll have to send your body home. |
