India: Two Days of Searching Sunderbans Tiger Reserve
www.travelswithsheila.com Six hours on the boat scanning the shore lines for tigers bordered on slow torture. So little to see...some much time sitting...and I read an article after the fact from India Wildlife Institute that there may only be 50 tigers in close to 500000 sq. kms. of delta. It's a miracle if anyone sees one. A short walk to the nearest village, two watchtowers and one more early morning before heading back to Sonakhali and Kolkata
India: Sunderbans Tiger Reserve
www.travelswithsheila.com Sunderbans is an unusual World Heritage Site. A delta with 102 islands of Mangrove Forest and supposedly 274 tigers. That is the "official" estimate which I sincerely doubt. One half of the jungle is under water at high tide, and with all the Magroves, you have to be lucky to see a Bengal Tiger swimming from island to island or on the mud flats at low tide. These tigers are man-eaters. Much easier to catch a villager than an animal and the islands closest to ...
India: Looking for Tigers at Sunderbans
www.travelswithsheila.com Our first "jungle cruise" took place in the afternoon after arrival. The boats are not allowed to go into the tributaries and inlets but motor through the exact same areas. Big misunderstanding on my expectations based on Borneo, Africa and other Tiger Reserves in India. Oh well... Deer, monkeys, and one estuary crocodile. At least the food was fabulous at Sunderbans Tiger Camp and the staff couldn't have been nicer. A fun bonfire, dance (sorry about the darkness ...

Sunderbans - The wondrous winner from West Bengal!
Situated at the mouth of the Ganges, Sunderbans is spread across areas of West Bengal. It is known for the Royal Bengal Tiger and numerous fauna including species of birds, spotted deer, crocodiles and snakes. It is estimated that there are 500 Bengal tigers and about 30000 spotted deer in the area. The name Sundarbans is derived from the Sundari trees growing in the area. It is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world. The forest spreads over 10000 sq km of ...

as we were not allowed to take any cameras into the reserves we had to compile some pictures from Yahoo images, which were as close as they possibly can.
