Title:
An Amtrak Afternoon: Part Two - "Rising Star"
Description:
Ride along on a day trip aboard Amtrak trains #91 & #92, the SILVER STAR, (with a bonus appearance by SILVER METEOR #97) on February 4, 2009. Here in Part Two of two, I journey from Sebring, FL back to where I started in Tampa several hours earlier. With the #92 running behind, it allows me to be at the Sebring station when the southbound #97 breezes through (I debut my new custom-design emblem for the SILVER METEOR in the opening credits). Later we peek around inside the station and outside while the agent announces the northbound STAR's arrival. It surges into the station and next thing you know, we're aboard and "rising" up the state after "falling" on the southbound train earlier. As we pass the spur into Avon Park, we watch the town as it unfolds in our window. Sighting their old Seaboard passenger station, I throw things into slow-motion so we don't blink and miss it. The station has been turned into a museum and features a dining car from the pre-Amtrak California Zephyr train. (Yes, I misspelled "Exhibit".) Next we make our return pass through Lakeland, looking at the sides we missed on the way down. Then we cross the bridge over the Tamoa Bypass Canal, where the Hillsborough River's overflow is directed and where Tampa gets much of its drinking water. Then we see the train curve ahead of us as it makes its northerly turn onto the Neve Wye spur in preparation for it's stop into Tampa. Coming to a halt under an Interstate 4 overpass, you'll hear passengers ask the routine question, "Are we in Tampa?" Technically, yes,, but we still have to back our way into downtown. We soon reverse direction and back out of the Neve Wye back onto the A-Line. We see Ybor City looking south this time and witness the train cross over the tracks for the TECO Electric Streetcar. Soon after we've backed our way into the terminal and disembark at Tampa Union Station. We view downtown and look back at the "Rising" SILVER STAR #92 as it stretches away from the station. It is running a lengthened compliment today with two (or three?) empty coach cars it is transporting. Our final sight is back in Ybor City where the SILVER STAR zooms past on its way out of town, bathed in the orange glow of the setting Florida sun.
