Looking for some fun in South Carolina? Call Captain Shawn Hern at (843) 684 1911 Dolphin Tours Firework Tours Beach Combing Tours (to Daufuskie Island) dolphindiscoverieshiltonhead.com Maybe you will be the next lucky person to see this rare dolphin feeding technique only known to exist in South Carolina. Feeding techniques: Coralling is a method where fish are chased to shallow water where they are more easily captured. In South Carolina, the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin takes this one step further with what has become known as strand feeding, where the fish are driven onto mud banks and retrieved from there. (Wikipedia). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have been observed charging fish onto mudbanks and then beaching themselves to feed on the stranded fish, a feeding behavior called strand-feeding. A total of 107 strand-feeding episodes were observed from 6 March 1996 to 17 May 1997 in the Stono River Estuary in South Carolina, of which 73 were recorded using a video camera aboard a small boat. The average duration of each strand-feeding episode was found to be 14 seconds. Each strand-feeding episode has been divided into four stages; pre-charging (5 seconds prior to charging), charging, beaching, and return. 72.9% of the strand-feeding episodes were observed in the spring (MarchMay), followed by 16.8% in the fall (Sept.-Nov.), 6.5% in the winter (Dec.-Feb.), and 3.7% in the summer (Jun. -Aug.). Of the four habitats categorized in the estuary, 77.6% of the strand-feeding episodes occurred in creeks, 9.4% in mouths of creeks, 9.4% in creeklets, and 3.7% in inlets. Furthermore, in analysis of the number of dolphins strandfeeding in one episode, 68.2% of the time there was only one dolphin strand-feeding. In grouping the dolphins, 86.4% of the time 1-2 dolphins were involved, 12.5% of the time 3-4, and 1.1% of the time 5-6 were involved. When strand-feeding in groups, the charging action was always synchronized among individuals. Moreover, one hundred percent of the time the dolphins beached on their right sides. Sound production during strand-feeding is also being analyzed and digitized. (Atlantic Dolphin Research Cooperative). members.aol.com/adrcnet/1998/1998po08.html vimeo.com/rueckproductions

Bottlenose Dolphins, The Long Strand, West Cork, Ireland
Bottlenose dolphins feeding and interacting with the whale watch boat Voyager off The Long Strand, West Cork, Ireland. There were six animals in total, all adults which were seen the following day. We recognise some of these animals from previous encounters in different years because of the distinctive marking on the dorsal fins and backs of these animals as they form part of the Whale Watch West Cork Photo ID catalogue for Bottlenose Dolphins off West Cork. These charismatic dolphins ...
