Quinn Rallies For MAP Grant At SIU
Description:
CARBONDALE -- Hoping to drum up support, Governor Pat Quinn continued his series of rallies at SIU. More than five thousand SIU students rely on the Monetary Award Program, or MAP, grants and dozens of them packed the student center auditorium. More than 130 thousand college students across the state will lose their scholarship for next semester when funding runs out. SIU student Carina Beck knows she has a tough decision ahead of her if nothing is done. "The finish line is in front of me, I have three semesters to go but now I am faced with the possibility of having to give up my dream," said Beck. That's the sentiment of several students who come from low-income and working class families and rely on the financial aid. Quinn pins the blame on lawmakers in Springfield. "The bottom line is the legislature didn't want to deal with this issue," said Quinn. But Representative Mike Bost, whose district includes the SIU campus, says Quinn was the one who cut the MAP grants. "Basically there were areas that he was going to have to make some tough decisions on," said Bost, "he chose that the tough decision area would be MAP grants." Quinn signed the budget last July knowing cuts would have to be made. "The General Assembly didn't want to take any responsibility for making cuts, they had three billion dollars worth of need and they said well we'll give you a billion dollars and you try to fill three billion dollars worth of need," said Quinn. Quinn says lawmakers will approve more funding for MAP grants, but students like Beck are left to wonder about their future. "Giving up on my education doesn't just mean giving up on me, it means giving up on my children's lives, at least the lives I wanted for them," said Beck. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission will hold a public hearing about the MAP grants Monday on the SIU campus. And on Thursday students will travel to Springfield to lobby lawmakers in hopes of restoring the funding. By Ryan Kruger rkruger@wsiltv.com
