The fall high school football season opens tonight and Friday night for many schools across Minnesota. In local action tonight, the Fridley Tigers will host the Columbia Heights Hylanders. The Hylanders will try to avenge a 15-14 loss to Fridley in the 2008 season. The Spring Lake Park Panthers host the Rogers Royals in a non-conference rematch; the Panthers lost at Rogers in 2008. The Blaine Bengals will play in the third and final game that features a Sun Focus area team tonight. The Class 5A state runners-up from 2008, will travel to face the Osseo Orioles. Tonight's kickoffs at Fridley, Spring Lake Park and Osseo are all scheduled for 7 p.m. Blaine City Council members tonight will vote on authorizing the establishment of and the city's participation in a new convention and visitor's bureau. Blaine would also appoint a member to serve on the Board of Directors. During an August workshop, the council was presented with the articles of incorporation and proposed bylaws for Minnesota Metro North Tourism and supported the regional organization. The new group would focus on sports marketing and comprise of cities east of the Mississippi River. Other meeting highlights include voting on a resolution to certify the proposed 2010 general fund budget and tax levy, and adopting a less restrictive liquor ordinance. Seniors near Irondale High School can get low-cost help with home repairs and seasonal chores from students. High school students will be supervised by a licensed professional from the school. To qualify for the program, seniors must be at least 60 years old and live within three miles of the school. The program is coordinated by Northwest Youth and Family Services and the school.
