Hot Springs in Hailuogou National Park, China

Title:
Hot Springs in Hailuogou National Park, China

Description:
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com The forest path down to the Hot Springs at Camp #2 was too slippery so we just went back on the road and hailed a bus instead. The Reshuigou Hot Springs (also called "Gongga Magic Spring") has water temperatures up to 91 degrees centrigrade/195 degrees fahrenheit from geothermal action. That's hard to believe and I wasn't going to test the truth of 195 F. water but one pool was 43 C/109 F and I couldn't even get one foot in it...so HOT! A fun experience, immersing in different pools that only got hotter the higher you went and sharing a few words with the very vocal Chinese families and children.... everyone having a great time.

...Hours Later, At The Top Of Hailuogou Glacier Park, China
www.travelswithsheila.com There are different walking options once you are finally at the top. You could head uphill past the Gongga Shan worship point, head in the direction of Glaciers 2 and 3, or downhill (then uphill) to Glacier 1 for better viewing. There is also a forest path down to the Hot Springs at Camp #2 which is where we were heading next. It would have been a more interesting experience to visit in the dry season to take advantage of the hikes. July and August is rainy season ...

Unique Road Sights Driving to Maduo, China
www.travelswithsheila.com It was at least seven hours by road from Gonghe to Maduo with nothing to do but sit back and enjoy the scenery that was outstanding. After all, how many times in your life do you get to see Eagles just sitting alongside the road? Tibetans herding their animals on motorcycles? Bee keepers tending their hives? Blue poppies? Fantastic scenery that made almost every minute a National Geographic special...
Chairman Mao's Long March Came Through Moxi, China
www.travelswithsheila.com Mao Zedong began his Long March in October 1934, Jiangxi Province and actually passed through Moxi in 1935 where he commandeered a house owned by the Catholic Church next door to rest for two weeks. This house has now been turned into a museum extolling glorious Chairman Mao. The custodian unlocked the door and led us through while ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I showed the proper respect due Mao while traveling through China by always referred to him as "Chairman ...
Moxi, Gateway to Hailuogou National Glacier Park, China
www.travelswithsheila.com Moxi is an ancient town that is growing by leaps and bounds. Construction takes place 24 and you won't recognize the place in another year. Moxi is at the foot of Hailuogou National (Glacier) Park -- also called "Conch Valley" -- set at 2000 meters/6651 feet. Settled into the "Ice Mountain Hotel"...our original hotel had Chinese VIP's staying there and when VIP's occupy anything, "no foreigners" are allowed. We'd enter the park tomorrow...
...Then, You Have to Take The Slow Gondola to The Top of Hailuogou National Glacier Park, China
www.travelswithsheila.com One hour later, we still weren't at the top of the viewing area. Off the bus, show passports again and climb aboard the gondola. The gondola deliberately moves at a snail's pace (and that's being kind) to allow plenty of time for photographs and video of the dingy, grey glacier tongue. It is possible to walk from the bus stop onto the glacier with its boulders and crevasses but allow plenty of time. The sun made an appearance from behind the clouds and there was ...
Cooking Up Chinese Food in Guzan, China
www.travelswithsheila.com By far, one of the best meals (if not the best) we had in China came strictly by chance when Mr. Wang stopped the car for lunch in Guzan. In and out of one restaurant that he didn't like and into another, I stood there watching and mesmerized by the cook's speed. When I attempt to stir fry a little Chinese at home, the sink is filled with prep dishes and most of the time is spent making a sauce. And, of course, there's no way my kitchen could withstand the wok heat ...
Old Moxi, China and A Local Invites Us In
www.travelswithsheila.com We spent one full day walking around little Moxi, letting feet take us where they would and stopping whenever something interesting came along. There were quite a few happenstances for one short day and the first occurred when we met an elderly local while walking down a small street. This man, traditionally dressed in Chinese-style Mao jacket and hat, graciously invited us into his 100-year old house to talk...actually, we talked, Mr. Wang and Dondup translated ...
The "China Narratives" Art Exhibition in Chengdu, China
www.travelswithsheila.com Our exploration of the Eastern Tibetan Plateau and Khampa area ended in Chengdu with a stay at the Holiday Inn East Century City. Not in the downtown area of Chengdu but close to the huge convention center. By coincidence, all guests of the Holiday Inn were invited to visit an art exhibition in the center at no charge. The "China Narratives" detailed in contemporary art, China's sociological and economic changes over the years. A compelling exhibit that not only ...
Sopo Watchtower Village on The Way to Hailuogou National Park, China
www.travelswithsheila.com Not too far outside of Danba is the Sopo Watchtower Village. Extremely picturesque on the side of the hill. One of the best preserved villages and watchtower clusters in the entire area but no access except by feet. I would definitely schedule a visit here, feet or no feet. The Chinese Government is amping up the construction on this not-so-good road by tunneling through mountains. Badly needed since landslides frequently wipe out villages along with the road ...
