Started in the 1930s as a Depression-era public works project, it took over fifty years to complete. This highway, noted for its beautiful scenic views, meanders through the Blue Ridge Mountains for 469.1 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to U.S. 441 at Oconaluftee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North Carolina. For seventeen miles it winds its way through Floyd County, one of the most beautiful and photographed areas of the parkway. There is no fee for using the parkway and it is a favorite destination for many travelers for many reasons. Along the parkway can be found plenty of opportunities to stop, eat, stretch, visit restrooms and exhibits, hike, fish or view wildlife. Historic sites and buildings, each with its own unique history, are found all along the parkway giving the traveler opportunities to be transported back in time as they explore the cultural heritage of the area while enjoying the spectacular natural views. The parkway is an excellent destination for birdwatchers. The Appalachian Mountains are along the flyway for most eastern migratory birds. Photographers also will find an abundance of unique photographic opportunities. Hikers and horseback riders, as well as wildflower and history enthusiast will find what they are looking for along Americas Favorite Drive. Some points of interest in Floyd County include: Milepost 120.4 - Enjoy a 3.7-mile side trip to Roanoke Mountain. Roanoke is where the Great Wagon Road branched south into North Carolina and west into Kentucky, the route of many an Appalachian settler. Milepost 154 - The Trail Cabin, circa 19th-century, represents the isolation of mountain residents. The location has been described as spectacular! Milepost 176.2 - Mabry Mill is not to be missed. Explore the mill, a blacksmith shop, wheelwright's and a whiskey still. Demonstrations take place spring through fall. Milepost 189 - The Puckett Cabin, also 19th-century, was the home of Mrs. Orleana Hawks Puckett, a mid-wife. Above taken from- http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit... Be Prepared for your Parkway Tour It is a good idea to always travel with emergency supplies, especially when traveling the parkway. Weather conditions in the mountains can contrast greatly from the surrounding valleys or the piedmont region. Be sure to monitor the local forecasts and be prepared for situations that can arise from vehicle trouble to sever weather conditions.
