Title:
Gunsmith - Drill and tap a Mauser receiver for scope bases

Description:
If you have the right tools it is fairly easy to drill and tap a Mauser receiver to accept scope bases. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates the process for drilling and tapping a receiver using only hand tools. He begins be securing the receiver in a special drill and tap fixture made by Wheeler Engineering. A drill bushing is inserted into the fixture to ensure the hole is properly spaced. A bit of cutting oil is applied to speed up the process. Once the hole is drilled, the drill bushing is replaced with the tap bushing and the hole is tapped by hand. Remember to go slow during this part of the process, backing off the tap every quarter turn to prevent breaking the tap.

How to Drill & Tap
From "Dull Knife Productions" Hey all, I had a few folks ask me how I made the threads for my elbow connectors into my cell. Well your in luck cause here is a vid showing how I do it. I hope this helps. AH ps BTW when you get more experience with this, you will find what drill bit & tap sizes you need to use with whatever specific threaded elbow you use. Again this is just the "dull knife" way of getting it done.
Gunsmith - How to reshape the tang on a Mauser receiver
When converting a military Mauser to a sporting rifle, it is common to reshape the tang of the receiver to allow for a thinner, more pleasing pistol grip. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of midwayusa, demonstrates this process using a Mauser 98 receiver and some basic tools you will find around the shop. He starts by applying some layout fluid to the tang and then scribes in his guidelines. With the receiver in a holding fixture he can file down to the lines using a mill bastard file. If ...

Gunsmith - Make sight elevator using scrap metal & hand tool
A missing rear sight elevator is a common problem with older rimfire rifles. In this guntec presentation Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of midwayusa, demonstrates the process for making a replacement rear sight elevator from scrap metal. He starts by applying some layout dye to the scrap metal and using a template made from another elevator he scribes the outline of the part. The major pieces of excess metal are cut off using a hacksaw with the metal held in a vise. Then the part is ...
Gunsmith - Tightening guard screws on a bolt action rifle
Tightening the guard screws to factory specified torque settings on a bolt action rifle is critical to ensure shot to shot consistency. This setting, usually around sixty inch pounds, ensures the critical portions of the action are seated firmly in the stock's bedding points. In this video Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of midwayusa, demonstrates how to properly torque the guard screws on a bolt action using the Wheeler Engineering Firearms Accurizing Tool, also referred to as the FAT ...
Gunsmith - Striking the barrels on an Antique Parker Shotgun
Striking the barrels is the name for a process of filing and sanding shotgun barrels to remove heavy pitting and scratching. This is done before the final polishing process. In this guntec demonstration, Larry Potterfield of midwayusa strikes the barrels on an old Parker Brothers shotgun. It is important to use a variety of backers during this process so that the curves and lines of the metal are unchanged. The use of shaped backers also help to maintain a large amount of contact area ...
Gunsmith - Open a fixed choke in a shotgun barrel
This video provides a basic introduction to the process of opening a fixed choke in a shotgun barrel. Hosted by Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of midwayusa, this guntec production chronicles this process using the barrels from a Parker Brothers Lifter Model shotgun. The first barrel is opened to improved cylinder using a reamer that is .007" tighter than the bore diameter. This reamer is threaded onto a long T-handle. Bushings are used to ensure the rod remains centered in the bore and ...
Gunsmith - How to reshape a rifle butt stock
After installing a grip cap or butt plate on a rifle stock you'll need to thin and reshape the butt area. In this guntec presentation Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of midwayusa, explains this process using simple hand tools. He starts by thinning the sides of the wrist to match the width of the grip cap and then blends the newly created flats into the wrist. Once the wrist is of the desired width, a series of flats are filed from the wrist to the butt of the stock, and then blended to ...
