We'll spend our entire morning aboard the Sea Lion, cruising in western Frederick Sound. Bring your binoculars and join us on deck to scan for wildlife in these richly productive waters. Just after breakfast, the Sea Lion gift shop will be open once again, and later in the morning, Mike Greenfelder will share his slide program, Water Birds and Wannabes, with us, both in the lounge. This afternoon, we'll arrive in the small fishing community of Petersburg. Also known as Alaska's Little Norway, Petersburg "was founded more than 100 years ago by Norwegian anglers. Petersburg was named after Peter Buschmann, a Norwegian immigrant who arrived in the late 1890s and homesteaded on the north end of the island. He built a cannery, sawmill and a dock between 1890 and 1900. His family's homesteads grew into Petersburg, which was populated largely by people of Scandinavian origin. The cannery has operated continuously since its completion. Petersburg is now one of Alaska's major fishing communities." The Sea Lion will be alongside a dock, so you can come and go as you please all afternoon. Those who signed up for flightseeing should check the posted schedule for departure times. There will be bicycles available for the afternoon, on a first come, first served basis. In addition, we'll offer naturalist-led walks on a boardwalk trail to a lovely muskeg on Kupreanof Island, as well as longer walks beyond the muskeg to Petersburg Creek, at two different times this afternoon. Although this will be a dry landing, we'll arrive at the trail head by Zodiac, so you'll want to bring your lifejackets to the dock if you plan to join us on the hike. You may also choose to wander in town on your own.
