The Karen National Union, which is one of Myanmar's biggest rebel groups, has named a new leader following the murder of its chief. KNU general secretary, Mahn Sha, was shot dead at his home in the Thai border town of Mae Sot on Thursday. And, as Hannah Belcher reports, the secretary general's death is seen as a blow to the many tribal groups who are opposed to Myanmar's military government.

China urges Myanmar to quell border fighting - 29 Aug 09
Fresh clashes between Myanmar troops and millitias near the border with China have resulted in the death of at least one person and forced as many as 30000 people to flee into China. As a result, Beijing has issued a rare rubuke to Myanmar's military rulers, calling on them to end the violence along its border. Al Jazeera's Azhar Sukri has this report.
