EUROPEAN HERITAGE LIBRARY WWW.EUROHERITAGE.NET From the 13th century onward, as the Polish Kingdom fractionalized, the German Empire charted crusading orders like the Teutonic Order as vassals to Christianize Europe. Invited by Hungarian and Polish authorities (esp. Mazovian dukes) to pacify and Christianize pagan Baltic Prussia, the ethnic Germans instead conquered and created a theocratic realm stretching from Pommerania to Estonia as a semi-vassal of the German Empire ("First Reich"). This became the Teutonic Knights' Monastic State. By the 15th century, as Poland gradually merged with Lithuania and became strong, Slavs and Balts under the Teutonic Order's authority requested aid from Poland-Lithuania to expel the Germans. Thus began the Polish-Teutonic War in 1410 (and the Battle of Grünwald depicted in this film) and the subsequent major 13-Years' War. By the end of these wars, the Teutonic Order had been crushed (but still survived), and Poland-Lithuania gradually became one of Europe's great empires. The copyright of the film has expired.
